Running In My Lane

This summer and next, two "significant" birthdays will happen according to the worldly views: #39 and #40 in 2016. (Though, to their credit, I'm either approaching 20 or 30, I can't keep up with what 40 is the new version of.) There seems to be something significant about approaching 40, and since you enter the next year on your birthday, the 40th year will begin for me this August. This has caused me some reflection...is this where I thought I would be?  Is this what I thought I would be doing?  Is there more?  Am I waiting for something else?  Am I where I should be?

Why all the questions?  Why does anxiety creep in on women (and maybe men?) as this number approaches. Why don't we just celebrate as the numbers rise? What have we gained? What have we learned? What have we overcome? What are we enduring? What have we lost?  All of those things have made us who we are, no matter if approaching 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100 or beyond.  The years tell our story, the one unique to us, to me. The years are significant, not because of the number but because of the story.

What is my story. Is something missing? Is there something more?  I've often thought this isn't where I thought I would be (single), but I also never really had a specific idea of what 5-years-from-now, 10-years-from-now, 20-years-from-now would really look like from when I was 18 and stepping out into my own for the first time.  I do sometimes think this isn't what I thought it would look like, which leads me to a feeling like I'm always waiting for something else.

Wait, it's been my word in life A LOT.  I have had to literally wait on so many things, but there are other things that have come quickly and when I'm running in my lane I know I'm pursuing exactly what I should be and timing isn't an issue. What is my lane?

There are a few things I know it is and some also I know it isn't. The thing that seems to constantly test the lines of my lane are really nothing but comparisons.
-- The endless media messages of "aging" and all the things I should do to keep my youthful skin.
-- The relentless campaigns and celebration of "skinny" and how to allegedly achieve a photo shopped magazine body.
-- The perfect husband, children, house, career, family, party-throwing, fashion, decorating, crafting, vacations, and on and on.
-- My "used to be" self who could do _____, or looked like _____, or had this title, or was _____.

When I look right and left of my lane, I get sidetracked, lose sight of what my purpose is, and begin to think I'm off course, need to jump lanes and need to be doing more of this and less of this and better at this and achieve this.  When really, none of that matters because it is not where I am supposed to be.

The track is deceiving, the staggered start and race lines that look like one lane could run shorter or longer depending on where you're positioned.  When I was in Junior High I "ran" track, which really meant every day I practiced and one day my Coach {bless her for a life lesson that has stuck with me forever} let me run in a track meet.  I was lapped by all the other people, and received my own standing ovation of cheers from the stands as I came into the finish line (where they might have had to clear the start of next race because they realized I was still on the track) "sprinting" the last bit like my Coach taught me.  I'm sure at the time that was quite dramatic to me, such a defeat.

Even now when I jog (I am not, and will never be, a runner) and I want to stop and walk I can feel defeated and compare myself to someone else I see jogging, that I should be able to keep going.  Just yesterday I had these thoughts.  I had to remind myself all weekend I had hardly eaten because something attacked my stomach and I wasn't feeling good and so I didn't have my usual energy and really....

WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE IF I WALK?!?!

Sometimes I have to shout that to myself.  To remind myself. This is my lane to run, no matter how fast or slow.  No matter what the version of "perfection" or "goals" looks like to the right or left. No matter where I am on the track, ahead or behind someone else. Sometimes I'm sprinting in to a cheering crowd, sometimes I am grinding it out by myself at snails pace.  What matters is I stay in my lane.

Really, I'm not waiting. Waiting I'm coming to realize is deceit.  Waiting for a move?  Waiting for a spouse? Waiting for different job?  Waiting for someone to notice me?  Waiting for  opportunity? All this really implies is there is something better on the other side.

This hangs in my bathroom, from the Athleta catalog {Hi Athleta - happy to wear and blog your clothes if you've got some leftovers to give away, xo}, with my lettering...a reminder: by myself, no one around, I need to focus and push in my lane.

Picture from Athleta Catalog
This life, right now, is enough.
My lane. Not her lane, or their lane. My lane.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:1-2 (ESV)

I keep pushing forward. Despite the numbers of years. Despite what someone else says is the goal. Despite the time it takes.  I focus and push forward in my lane at my pace. Pursuing Jesus and who God has called me to be. That is enough.

What I'm Wearing ~ 06.05.15 {the END of school!}

Hard to believe, but sometimes seemed like it would never come, the end of school has come and gone and now it is summer!  Somewhere along the way this school year I read a blog post entitled "How to be a Real Fashion Blogger" and step 1 was have a photographer.  Well, this is certainly no "real" fashion blog, but from the start I've only hoped to inspire you to put things together you have, or maybe identify how to add something you would like into your closet/shoes/accessories and incorporate in your outfits.  Thank you to those of you who read regularly, give such sweet compliments and comments.  I have always loved finding bargains and good deals and creating my own looks and the blog is a fun way to keep up with it!  Even if it took me 2 hours on the first day of summer vacay to download all the pics from my phone. :)  Not sure what this will look like next year, maybe Sunday Style, a favorite outfit from the week and something "after hours"- weekend casual, dressed up, going out or working out.  For now...here's the last week of 2014-2015 school year!

Disclaimer: What I'm Wearing is in hopes inspiration for your closet, that I can give you some ideas from what I'm wearing. What fits you doesn't always fit me. What fits me, doesn't always fit you. So, we all know the style of jeans that work best for us, the brands of shoes we love, etc. I'm not a "linker" to buy all of these outfits here. Truth be told, a lot of my clothes are many many years old and I pick up things all around the place. I'm don't update my wardrobe every season with the latest and greatest. I don't have signed up for Pinterest, so if there's something you like, you can "pin it" to save. Hopefully you're just inspired, maybe by something you have and didn't think about putting it together or maybe you are just looking for a simple accessory to add in and these posts can give you some ideas.

Monday, dream big tank by the girls at Junk Gypsy.  This tank is a pretty deep scoop neck, it's layered with another tank under it, but felt like the scarf was good add in over the deep scoop for school. White jeans needed one more school wear this year too!

Tuesday we were into full days of finals and I started the day with my conference period which meant extra time without students and I got my classroom and computer lab all packed up for summer!  This outfit was chosen with that work in mind...scarf off, flats for lots of trips back and forth between rooms and down the hall to my storage closet.  Put the scarf back on before the bell rang and was ready for classes to resume.  These pants have made several appearances this year, and I am thinking I'm going to showcase some "repeats" through the summer and all the ways to wear them.  Even mustard/greenish colored pants can repeat often!

Wednesday was the last day to have to dress up professional for the year.  This outfit drove me crazy all day and I had a hoodie on within 10 minutes of getting to school. Ever have one of those days?  I do love this soft pink top, but it's too wide of shoulders for school and kept sliding off my shoulder.  All. Day.  Even under the hoodie.  Note to self, this is a weekend/summer  shirt, not a school shirt.  :|

Thursday was the last day with our students and the bell rang at 11:35...so long to them, have a happy summer, and the last "Spirit Shirt" day of the year.  Felt like the 14-15 shirt was appropriate for this day.  And, I'm still breaking in these new white heels, so a 1/2 day was a good day to wear them again!  With my t-shirt?  Of course. Why not!?  In my hand, my Spark, drink that every morning.  This summer I'm going to be living on Rehydrate after workouts in the Texas heat!!

Friday was the final day to sign off on grades and  turn in the keys!  It was also National Donut Day.  I realize there is a "National Day" for everything these days, and I don't get behind too many of them, but donut day, I am on board.  So, I stopped.  I saw several "what it takes to work off donuts" posts on my social media feeds, but everything in moderation and sometimes that's a donut (or two) for me! I live on the edge!  These shorts are from Walmart, Danskin line and I love them - all my favorite greens combined!

Our school Librarian compiles a 3 word video at the end of year, shown during our Staff Luncheon, and these were my 3 words for this year.  As of 10:15am Friday morning, it is finished!!

And, the final week in review, ending up just like I like it...in my summer uniform!

Here's to fun days ahead and as they say...

Summer.
Hair gets lighter.
Skin gets darker.
Water gets warmer.
Drinks get colder.
Music gets louder.
Nights get longer.
Life gets better.

Blessings,

What I'm Wearing ~ 05.29.15 {The Texas Floods}

This week was one for the record books, and not the kind of records you're looking to hold! Texas has had what is now I am guessing the "Wettest May on record" after enduring years of drought we have had days and days and days of rain with extreme amounts of rainfall, not just soaking showers.  The rain is wreaking havoc on our state and leaving mass chaos behind with every storm front that pushes through.

Hopefully you're just inspired, maybe by something you have and didn't think about putting it together or maybe you are just looking for a simple accessory to add in and these posts can give you some ideas.

Monday was Memorial Day and I was up early to get a few things done before meeting some friends for breakfast, which is my favorite and was the 2nd breakfast outing of the long weekend!  I found this Small Town Girl shirt recently at TJMaxx for $9.99 and I've been seeing these shirts in boutiques for a while now, mostly at $25 and up! Leggings are from Target and the Nike In Season trainers I highly recommend for days on your feet. I wouldn't workout in these shoes, but they are perfect for everything else all day long!

Tuesday morning I awoke to a major storm and at 5:15 I started seeing flood photos from overnight via Twitter and school cancellations were rolling in due to high water.  I received an Emergency Alert our schools were "on", and 15 minutes later, an alert that we were "Off".  So, it was another day at home.  I was paralyzed to the news, and didn't get much done Tuesday watching the coverage of Houston. This was on the heels of Blanco river rising over 15 feet in one hour over the weekend in Wimberley, causing mass destruction to that small town..large houses completely taken off their foundation, cars and giant trees uprooted and washed down river like toys in a tub. People in Houston were stranded/abandoned cars overnight and here are a couple of pictures from the aftermath, you can see more online....

Photos from KPRC
Cars on I-10 under water Monday night & the same cars after water started to recede Tuesday

Wednesday was back to school and I had a school interview Wednesday afternoon. I've mentioned before I love black pants and sleeveless shirt, which also goes well with suit jacket when necessary.  Of course leopard added a little color.  It has been a while since I was in a suit. Nothing like interviewing for the job & being told afterwards you don't meet the rules of years of teaching required! No worries, good experience and I know what's meant to be will always be!  :)

I have been on the hunt for a replacement pair of bubble-gum pink heels that were among shoes ruined from my storage unit.  However, decided to call off that search in favor of these white heels. They are Jessica Simpson and currently close to 1/2 off via Nordstrom! Arrived in the mail Wed, after delivery delay due to flood, and I had to wear them on Thursday!  Gray/gold/white is one of my favorite combinations for summer and I imagine these shoes will get lots of wear! Starting with Sunday!  (You can follow me on Instagram for #SundayStyle posts: Click Here).

Friday! The last Friday of the school year for our students!  As I left school today the skies had cleared from another day of torrential rainfall early in the morning.  However, there are small towns all around Texas who are facing mandatory evacuations over the weekend as rivers are expected to top out and flood additional places. Would you pray for Texas and Oklahoma?  So much damage in a week, so many lives lost, people still missing and rain is still in the forecast for several days to come.....

And the week in review...

Kids have 3.5 days to go. I have 5 finals to give and this year of "What I'm Wearing" will be wrapped up and summer uniform will take over...hair gets lighter, skin gets darker, drinks get colder, water gets warmer, nights get longer!

Blessings,

Summer Reading List 2015

With just a few school days left that means it's time to get my summer reading list together!  I wrote one at the end of last summer (read it here) and have not read nearly as much through the school year as I would have liked.  If I'm going to get to all the books on  my summer list, I will again need to read one book per week!

My Mom was a Librarian and I really never did love to read, which has obviously changed, and this year our Library had "READ" posters on display all year. We received them from the library the week before Mother's Day, so I lovingly included it with my Mom's Mother's Day gift.  :)  Don't worry, it wasn't her only gift, but I do think that I've learned to love to read and can discuss books with my Mom is truly a gift!

Here's what is on my list this summer....all images and links are for Amazon.com.

Flash - the homeless donkey who taught me about life, faith and second chances.  I have seen this book mentioned over and over by lots of people who have read other books I've also read.  I love to see people's book requests on social media and responses, I find out about lots of good books this way!

All The Light We Cannot See - My Librarian lent me this book earlier in the year, but I haven't attempted reading it yet, it's a long one, and I knew I wouldn't make it through it.  However, it's #1 on my summer list and has received top reviews!

Bird by Bird - some instructions on writing and life.  Since you're reading my blog, you know I like to write.  I recently asked some of my favorite authors how many words are in a book....apparently about 60,000.  Yikes.  But, I have a dream to one day write a book and this book has been one I've seen recommended over and over for writers.  I will probably read a chapter or so of this in the mornings with my coffee and Bible Study.

Hot Chocolate in June - a true story of love, loss and restoration. This is another one I've seen posted on some of my favorite blogs and figured it is worth a read.

The One and Only because every summer needs a beach read!  I've never read Emily Giffin, shocking to some, but have always heard good things.  So, I might find more of her books on my list after this one.  I'm assuming some of you have read this one!

Scary Close - dropping the  act and finding true intimacy. This is one that has been recommended to me as well as Donald Miller's other books.  I am always fascinated by people's behaviors and the walls we all build up to certain circumstances and I think this book might give some good insight.

Service - A Navy Seal at war. I read Marcus Luttrell's Lone Survivor several years ago and have had this book for a couple of years.  It spent a little time in storage, but it's time to get it read!  I would also like to read American Sniper and Taya Kyle's new memoir American Wife.

Seamless - Understanding the Bible as one complete story. Last year I did Beth Moore's Children of the Day Bible Study through the summer and I loved it.  I was a member of the launch team for Seamless and am looking forward to working through this study this summer. I have read several of Angie Smith's books, she is a gifted writer.

Savor - Living abundantly where you are, as you are.  This book released and was mentioned on all my favorite blogs.  It's 365 devotions, so another book that will be in my "coffee stack" for mornings at my bar this summer.  Plus it is the prettiest linen covered book with navy trimmed pages. Would make a great  gift for someone too!

If you have a favorite book I would love to hear about it!

Happy Reading!

What I'm Wearing ~ 05.22.15 {the last 5 day week of the school year}

This week was the last full 5-day week of the school year. Long about March, I wasn't sure this day would come and now just a few short days and the bell will ring and it is SUMMER!! Here's what I wore this week....

Monday, this jacket is one I have worn before and is one of those pieces that makes an outfit all on it's own. I've worn it with cowboy boots, and this week I wore it with cropped navy (even though you can't tell in my high-quality iPhone photos) pants and multi-colored heels for a little color.  Simple and easy, requires minimal effort and it's a swing cut, so very comfortable as well!

Tuesday was our final day with our Community Partners in our classrooms. It has been fun to get to know a group of students I don't teach and great to see them interact with our community partner as well. I'm thankful almost 100 people show up to our school once a month (usually with snacks) and invest in our students.  Volunteering is near and dear to my heart, so am thankful for those who volunteer with us!  These jeans were a sale rack (had to have been returned) find at the Gap last summer. They are my size and a "Tall" so someone didn't like them, but they are perfect for school days for me!

Wednesday I pulled out my palazzo pants for one more round this year.  Previously seen here in the elastic edition post.  :)  Love wooden jewelry and these beads were a perfect match and little change in look for these pants. I have mentioned before my trick for boyfriend shirts, I just get them from the guy's section. I wore one last week too! They are perfect cut for me, and sleeves are long enough and are way cheaper than the "boyfriend" shirt on the Gap Tall website! This is the light version of my dark denim pearl snap I wear over and over.

Rockets Game Day means another day to wear my Rockets T!  But, really...bless our Rockets heart. (Hi Laurie - Your Warriors are owning us, and Curry - he is impressive!!).  We just can't  seem to come out and play to win. But, we're still cheering them on. This day in heels, skinny black jeans and a little heart cardigan. Sometimes you have to wear your heart on your sleeve.

Fri-Yay!  The weather this week has continued to have rain almost every day, making like 3 weeks of rainy days. Even got a little cooler and temps were in the 70's late Thursday. Is this Seattle!? That's a rarity this time of year in Texas and a good reason to wear my cowboy boots with jeans + spirit T! Keeping with Thursday, switched from zebra to leopard for my belt. Speaking of belts, I've got in my head I want a little skinny lavender belt...it's my mission to find one for summer!

Apparently the theme this week was muted plus crimson! For those of you finishing school this next week, cheers to the end!  For those of you who have men and women in your families that have served our country giving their lives for our freedom, I salute them and may your heart be comforted this Memorial Day.

Blessings,

What I'm Wearing ~ 05.15.15 {the end is near}

I've been trying to push down the urge to live and die by the Countdown to Summer, but at the end of this week just 12.5 days remain. Most importantly that means only 12 more days to make my lunch and wash out my lunch dishes after school. I eat pretty much the same thing every day for lunch, and it's 4 little containers to wash out every day.  Isn't it funny how we can loathe something that only take 2 or 3 minutes to do.  I can put it off like it's a 2 day project like a champion. Speaking of Champions, our Houston Rockets are playing for Western Conference Champions! I can remember {20} years ago when they won the Championship 94 and 95, so here's hoping for a repeat.

Monday the weather was still allowing for a tank and cardigan, and if you've been here all year, this was also worn the very first week back to school!  I love white, gray, gold and cognac all together! White jeans are tricky and I got lucky with these, someone must have returned them to my local GAP because they were a tall, and in my size and not see-through. Even though I've ordered several pairs over the years from GAP, they never worked like these do.

It has been said before, but I love a maxi skirt and/or maxi dress. A school friend recently said "the dress is like an adult onesie, only requires shoes and you're ready".  She's right. And, to be clear, let's not confuse the dress with the romper/jumpsuit, another option of adult onesie, truly tricky like the baby onesie with buttons and snaps and such.  These beads I've mentioned before, $7 at your local Walmart in all your favorite colors, including mine - bright green!  I of course had my "old-lady-cardigan" sweater on the ready for the varying temps in the classroom, but surprisingly only wore it for about 2 class periods!

Speaking of dresses, we had school awards Tuesday night and I took the tags off this navy dress from Marshall's.  Original price tag $238.  I paid $50 for it.  It is such a pretty dress (in my opinion) and classic navy blue.  The pin-tucks at the neckline are simple detail, easily worn alone or with a necklace (I would probably wear pearls or statement necklace).  This is one of those dresses I picked up to save, I didn't know when I would need it, and I don't buy too often like that, but it is a classic and timeless dress and I foresee wearing it for years to come. One of those that prove elusive when you really need to find it and abundant when there is no need for a dress. In case you missed it, I wrote about several dress options recently, click to read. Keeping it real...I jogged after school, laid on my floor for a little too long trying to cool off, then showered/washed my hair extra quick and ate this piece of pizza on the run while finishing up/getting ready to walk out the door.  And, Barney wasn't quite sure of the 6:15-6:45 whirlwind going on!

Wednesday was simple, black cropped pants, cardigan and statement necklace.  Pink and green are a favorite summer color combo and pairing this with a white v-neck was effortless. That could also have to do with the fact I was a little sleepy from staying up to watch the Rockets Tuesday night and the beginning of their comeback victory run!  Cardigans are on sale lots of places right now, but Spring colors abound and when you're in the south they are perfect for summer when it's sweltering outside (tank top) and below zero inside due to excessive AC (cardigan)!

These pants are several years old and I picked them up from a seller on the porch of a building in Round Top during Antiques Week. They were way before their time and the "palazzo pants" trend, but something different than I've ever had AND long enough for me, so I HAD to get them.  I've worn them with sandals, flip flops and cowboy boots. The shirt is borrowed from the boys section, a "perk" of being tall, the men's small is a perfect fit at a fraction of women's tall "boyfriend" shirts and it's the real deal. Now, if I could just find the real deal in a real boyfriend...but that's for another day...

Ending the week with Friday spirit day, which is getting more and more casual comfortable as the year comes to a finish. However, my favorite part of this day was my new earrings from a sweet family I babysit for often. The card was so dear to me, a thank you for being a part of their village in raising kids and the sweet note from their 6-year old son almost did me in. The earrings were icing on the cake. Every time I wear them I will think of the blessings that I have in sharing life with so many families and their sweet littles, especially these 2.

Realized at the end of this week there is only one more 5-day week of school.  And, the remaining days numbers will soon be in the single digits.  I know parents and students are "over it" and ready to be done.  I'm trying to keep my classes headed for a strong finish with some fun projects and I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with!  (Disclaimer: they do their projects in class and it's not for the science fair/homework.)

Keep pressing on,

What I'm Wearing ~ 05.08.15 {STAAR Sunday}

Nothing like being ready to hit publish and adding one more picture to lose everything already typed...so here goes again, probably shorter...

This week started with 3 days of STAAR End of Course testing and of course Friday is jeans/spirit shirts.  I'm not sure how Thursday was added in, but I will take it.  Instead of highlighting various High School spirit shirts, I thought I would post some recent Sunday Styles from the Spring.  Few recent Spring outfits were on the blog a couple of weeks ago too if you missed it.  Monday I was fortunate to be among the lucky ones to proctor and yes, that's my best pair of "active monitoring" tennis shoes.

Before moving on, Wednesday I was twinning (unplanned) with our Ag Teacher who is also my Department Chair.  He was so helpful to me last year in my first year of teaching and navigating student organization, lesson plans, grade book, campus to-dos and so many more questions.  I would have never made it through!  He has an amazing opportunity ahead for his family and it is bittersweet to see him leave.  However, I know great things are ahead!

This dress was from a "last call" rack at Francesca's which means there were only "singles" of each item left and they were 40% off. It is one of those dresses that is comfortable, requires really nothing extra and versatile to occasion.  It can be worn with heels, wedges, flats.  Perfect for a party, wedding, night out, church (which was this day) or bridal/baby shower.  I love dresses like this that do all of the work with none of the fuss, mostly meaning uncomfortable.

Because I believe in keeping it real, this day my hair was past due to be washed. However, I was working out right after church and try not to wash my hair knowing within 12 hours it will have to be done again if at all possible!  #lazy So, a little dry shampoo, teasing comb, headband and it was done.  This dress is one I've worn with heels, wedges, flip flops and even boots/legging/cardigan in the winter.  It has definitely earned it's 8:98 keep from Target clearance.  The hem is a little longer in the back, much like a favorite tank top, but in a dress.

Speaking of Target, I've never been to Target on release day of a designer collection until #LillyforTarget. Wow.  Safe to say I only got in and got this dress because of a lady who "left her spot in line because your worker said they were opening both doors" and I was outside the grocery side and a benefactor of her rant when she had finally argued enough to get the guy to open up both doors. All racks were literally emptied by the handful within about 60 seconds of women arriving to them.  It was greed at its best. Sadly, most of those items probably made their way to eBay and no one had any intention of wearing them.  This dress was the only thing I had seen in the preview I really wanted to try and get, so I was happy to have gotten it.  I received questions about the quality, it is lined, and I think in line with any Target dress quality. It has a fun v back and tie and again requires no fuss and will be great all summer!

This Easter I was intending to just wear a dress I had until I ran through Marshall's and picked up this dress from the clearance rack.  It is a (hard to see in pics) light pink with various gray watercolor marks.  I paired with gray heels and handbag.  I love a shift dress, clearly as this is 3rd of 4 dresses that is a simple shift.  This dress has still been in Marshall's recently, and for $15!!

Happy Mother's Day to all the Mama's out there, I am sure  thankful for mine! This is the same scarf from the school day pics (wore it on Cinco de Mayo) I recently found at Charming Charlie. I have looked for a while for a summer print and this one with bright pattern and orange pompom trim finally was the answer to my search! I haven't been there in a long time, however, they seem to have revised their pricing back to reasonable and I would imagine in the Houston market that is due to competing with Sam Moon. I will always support competition in the name of buy one get one FREE scarves!

When I looked back at my previous Sunday Style post, I didn't realize it has been since the end of last summer that I posted Sunday pics. You can keep up with them regularly via Facebook or Instagram. However, that posts shows 3 of the outfits included here, worn differently and proof of versatility and re-wear of my closet items, just like this scarf on Tuesday and Sunday!

Texas has had some crazy weather these last few weeks and this week looks no different. Stay safe if you're in the pattern of storms and stay strong through the finish of the school year! Summer is coming!

Blessings,
