What I'm Wearing ~ 05.29.15 {The Texas Floods}

This week was one for the record books, and not the kind of records you're looking to hold! Texas has had what is now I am guessing the "Wettest May on record" after enduring years of drought we have had days and days and days of rain with extreme amounts of rainfall, not just soaking showers.  The rain is wreaking havoc on our state and leaving mass chaos behind with every storm front that pushes through.

Disclaimer: What I'm Wearing is in hopes inspiration for your closet, that I can give you some ideas from what I'm wearing. What fits you doesn't always fit me. What fits me, doesn't always fit you. So, we all know the style of jeans that work best for us, the brands of shoes we love, etc. I'm not a "linker" to buy all of these outfits here. Truth be told, a lot of my clothes are many many years old and I pick up things all around the place. I'm don't update my wardrobe every season with the latest and greatest. I don't have signed up for Pinterest, so if there's something you like, you can "pin it" to save. Hopefully you're just inspired, maybe by something you have and didn't think about putting it together or maybe you are just looking for a simple accessory to add in and these posts can give you some ideas.

Monday was Memorial Day and I was up early to get a few things done before meeting some friends for breakfast, which is my favorite and was the 2nd breakfast outing of the long weekend!  I found this Small Town Girl shirt recently at TJMaxx for $9.99 and I've been seeing these shirts in boutiques for a while now, mostly at $25 and up! Leggings are from Target and the Nike In Season trainers I highly recommend for days on your feet. I wouldn't workout in these shoes, but they are perfect for everything else all day long!

Tuesday morning I awoke to a major storm and at 5:15 I started seeing flood photos from overnight via Twitter and school cancellations were rolling in due to high water.  I received an Emergency Alert our schools were "on", and 15 minutes later, an alert that we were "Off".  So, it was another day at home.  I was paralyzed to the news, and didn't get much done Tuesday watching the coverage of Houston. This was on the heels of Blanco river rising over 15 feet in one hour over the weekend in Wimberley, causing mass destruction to that small town..large houses completely taken off their foundation, cars and giant trees uprooted and washed down river like toys in a tub. People in Houston were stranded/abandoned cars overnight and here are a couple of pictures from the aftermath, you can see more online....

Photos from KPRC
 Cars on I-10 under water Monday night & the same cars after water started to recede Tuesday

Wednesday was back to school and I had a school interview Wednesday afternoon. I've mentioned before I love black pants and sleeveless shirt, which also goes well with suit jacket when necessary.  Of course leopard added a little color.  It has been a while since I was in a suit. Nothing like interviewing for the job & being told afterwards you don't meet the rules of years of teaching required! No worries, good experience and I know what's meant to be will always be!  :)

I have been on the hunt for a replacement pair of bubble-gum pink heels that were among shoes ruined from my storage unit.  However, decided to call off that search in favor of these white heels. They are Jessica Simpson and currently close to 1/2 off via Nordstrom! Arrived in the mail Wed, after delivery delay due to flood, and I had to wear them on Thursday!  Gray/gold/white is one of my favorite combinations for summer and I imagine these shoes will get lots of wear! Starting with Sunday!  (You can follow me on Instagram for #SundayStyle posts: Click Here).

Friday! The last Friday of the school year for our students!  As I left school today the skies had cleared from another day of torrential rainfall early in the morning.  However, there are small towns all around Texas who are facing mandatory evacuations over the weekend as rivers are expected to top out and flood additional places. Would you pray for Texas and Oklahoma?  So much damage in a week, so many lives lost, people still missing and rain is still in the forecast for several days to come.....

And the week in review...

Kids have 3.5 days to go. I have 5 finals to give and this year of "What I'm Wearing" will be wrapped up and summer uniform will take over...hair gets lighter, skin gets darker, drinks get colder, water gets warmer, nights get longer!

Blessings,

Summer Reading List 2015

With just a few school days left that means it's time to get my summer reading list together!  I wrote one at the end of last summer (read it here) and have not read nearly as much through the school year as I would have liked.  If I'm going to get to all the books on  my summer list, I will again need to read one book per week!

My Mom was a Librarian and I really never did love to read, which has obviously changed, and this year our Library had "READ" posters on display all year. We received them from the library the week before Mother's Day, so I lovingly included it with my Mom's Mother's Day gift.  :)  Don't worry, it wasn't her only gift, but I do think that I've learned to love to read and can discuss books with my Mom is truly a gift!

Here's what is on my list this summer....all images and links are for Amazon.com.

Flash - the homeless donkey who taught me about life, faith and second chances.  I have seen this book mentioned over and over by lots of people who have read other books I've also read.  I love to see people's book requests on social media and responses, I find out about lots of good books this way!

All The Light We Cannot See - My Librarian lent me this book earlier in the year, but I haven't attempted reading it yet, it's a long one, and I knew I wouldn't make it through it.  However, it's #1 on my summer list and has received top reviews!

Bird by Bird - some instructions on writing and life.  Since you're reading my blog, you know I like to write.  I recently asked some of my favorite authors how many words are in a book....apparently about 60,000.  Yikes.  But, I have a dream to one day write a book and this book has been one I've seen recommended over and over for writers.  I will probably read a chapter or so of this in the mornings with my coffee and Bible Study.

Hot Chocolate in June - a true story of love, loss and restoration. This is another one I've seen posted on some of my favorite blogs and figured it is worth a read.

The One and Only because every summer needs a beach read!  I've never read Emily Giffin, shocking to some, but have always heard good things.  So, I might find more of her books on my list after this one.  I'm assuming some of you have read this one!

Scary Close - dropping the  act and finding true intimacy. This is one that has been recommended to me as well as Donald Miller's other books.  I am always fascinated by people's behaviors and the walls we all build up to certain circumstances and I think this book might give some good insight.

Service - A Navy Seal at war. I read Marcus Luttrell's Lone Survivor several years ago and have had this book for a couple of years.  It spent a little time in storage, but it's time to get it read!  I would also like to read American Sniper and Taya Kyle's new memoir American Wife

Seamless - Understanding the Bible as one complete story. Last year I did Beth Moore's Children of the Day Bible Study through the summer and I loved it.  I was a member of the launch team for Seamless and am looking forward to working through this study this summer. I have read several of Angie Smith's books, she is a gifted writer.

Savor - Living abundantly where you are, as you are.  This book released and was mentioned on all my favorite blogs.  It's 365 devotions, so another book that will be in my "coffee stack" for mornings at my bar this summer.  Plus it is the prettiest linen covered book with navy trimmed pages. Would make a great  gift for someone too!

If you have a favorite book I would love to hear about it!

Happy Reading!

What I'm Wearing ~ 05.22.15 {the last 5 day week of the school year}

This week was the last full 5-day week of the school year. Long about March, I wasn't sure this day would come and now just a few short days and the bell will ring and it is SUMMER!! Here's what I wore this week....

Monday, this jacket is one I have worn before and is one of those pieces that makes an outfit all on it's own. I've worn it with cowboy boots, and this week I wore it with cropped navy (even though you can't tell in my high-quality iPhone photos) pants and multi-colored heels for a little color.  Simple and easy, requires minimal effort and it's a swing cut, so very comfortable as well!

Tuesday was our final day with our Community Partners in our classrooms. It has been fun to get to know a group of students I don't teach and great to see them interact with our community partner as well. I'm thankful almost 100 people show up to our school once a month (usually with snacks) and invest in our students.  Volunteering is near and dear to my heart, so am thankful for those who volunteer with us!  These jeans were a sale rack (had to have been returned) find at the Gap last summer. They are my size and a "Tall" so someone didn't like them, but they are perfect for school days for me!

Wednesday I pulled out my palazzo pants for one more round this year.  Previously seen here in the elastic edition post.  :)  Love wooden jewelry and these beads were a perfect match and little change in look for these pants. I have mentioned before my trick for boyfriend shirts, I just get them from the guy's section. I wore one last week too! They are perfect cut for me, and sleeves are long enough and are way cheaper than the "boyfriend" shirt on the Gap Tall website! This is the light version of my dark denim pearl snap I wear over and over.

Rockets Game Day means another day to wear my Rockets T!  But, really...bless our Rockets heart. (Hi Laurie - Your Warriors are owning us, and Curry - he is impressive!!).  We just can't  seem to come out and play to win. But, we're still cheering them on. This day in heels, skinny black jeans and a little heart cardigan. Sometimes you have to wear your heart on your sleeve.

Fri-Yay!  The weather this week has continued to have rain almost every day, making like 3 weeks of rainy days. Even got a little cooler and temps were in the 70's late Thursday. Is this Seattle!? That's a rarity this time of year in Texas and a good reason to wear my cowboy boots with jeans + spirit T! Keeping with Thursday, switched from zebra to leopard for my belt. Speaking of belts, I've got in my head I want a little skinny lavender belt...it's my mission to find one for summer!

Apparently the theme this week was muted plus crimson! For those of you finishing school this next week, cheers to the end!  For those of you who have men and women in your families that have served our country giving their lives for our freedom, I salute them and may your heart be comforted this Memorial Day.

Blessings,

What I'm Wearing ~ 05.15.15 {the end is near}

I've been trying to push down the urge to live and die by the Countdown to Summer, but at the end of this week just 12.5 days remain. Most importantly that means only 12 more days to make my lunch and wash out my lunch dishes after school. I eat pretty much the same thing every day for lunch, and it's 4 little containers to wash out every day.  Isn't it funny how we can loathe something that only take 2 or 3 minutes to do.  I can put it off like it's a 2 day project like a champion. Speaking of Champions, our Houston Rockets are playing for Western Conference Champions! I can remember {20} years ago when they won the Championship 94 and 95, so here's hoping for a repeat.

Monday the weather was still allowing for a tank and cardigan, and if you've been here all year, this was also worn the very first week back to school!  I love white, gray, gold and cognac all together! White jeans are tricky and I got lucky with these, someone must have returned them to my local GAP because they were a tall, and in my size and not see-through. Even though I've ordered several pairs over the years from GAP, they never worked like these do.

It has been said before, but I love a maxi skirt and/or maxi dress. A school friend recently said "the dress is like an adult onesie, only requires shoes and you're ready".  She's right. And, to be clear, let's not confuse the dress with the romper/jumpsuit, another option of adult onesie, truly tricky like the baby onesie with buttons and snaps and such.  These beads I've mentioned before, $7 at your local Walmart in all your favorite colors, including mine - bright green!  I of course had my "old-lady-cardigan" sweater on the ready for the varying temps in the classroom, but surprisingly only wore it for about 2 class periods!

Speaking of dresses, we had school awards Tuesday night and I took the tags off this navy dress from Marshall's.  Original price tag $238.  I paid $50 for it.  It is such a pretty dress (in my opinion) and classic navy blue.  The pin-tucks at the neckline are simple detail, easily worn alone or with a necklace (I would probably wear pearls or statement necklace).  This is one of those dresses I picked up to save, I didn't know when I would need it, and I don't buy too often like that, but it is a classic and timeless dress and I foresee wearing it for years to come. One of those that prove elusive when you really need to find it and abundant when there is no need for a dress. In case you missed it, I wrote about several dress options recently, click to read. Keeping it real...I jogged after school, laid on my floor for a little too long trying to cool off, then showered/washed my hair extra quick and ate this piece of pizza on the run while finishing up/getting ready to walk out the door.  And, Barney wasn't quite sure of the 6:15-6:45 whirlwind going on!

Wednesday was simple, black cropped pants, cardigan and statement necklace.  Pink and green are a favorite summer color combo and pairing this with a white v-neck was effortless. That could also have to do with the fact I was a little sleepy from staying up to watch the Rockets Tuesday night and the beginning of their comeback victory run!  Cardigans are on sale lots of places right now, but Spring colors abound and when you're in the south they are perfect for summer when it's sweltering outside (tank top) and below zero inside due to excessive AC (cardigan)!

These pants are several years old and I picked them up from a seller on the porch of a building in Round Top during Antiques Week. They were way before their time and the "palazzo pants" trend, but something different than I've ever had AND long enough for me, so I HAD to get them.  I've worn them with sandals, flip flops and cowboy boots. The shirt is borrowed from the boys section, a "perk" of being tall, the men's small is a perfect fit at a fraction of women's tall "boyfriend" shirts and it's the real deal. Now, if I could just find the real deal in a real boyfriend...but that's for another day...

Ending the week with Friday spirit day, which is getting more and more casual comfortable as the year comes to a finish. However, my favorite part of this day was my new earrings from a sweet family I babysit for often. The card was so dear to me, a thank you for being a part of their village in raising kids and the sweet note from their 6-year old son almost did me in. The earrings were icing on the cake. Every time I wear them I will think of the blessings that I have in sharing life with so many families and their sweet littles, especially these 2.

Realized at the end of this week there is only one more 5-day week of school.  And, the remaining days numbers will soon be in the single digits.  I know parents and students are "over it" and ready to be done.  I'm trying to keep my classes headed for a strong finish with some fun projects and I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with!  (Disclaimer: they do their projects in class and it's not for the science fair/homework.)

Keep pressing on,

What I'm Wearing ~ 05.08.15 {STAAR Sunday}

Nothing like being ready to hit publish and adding one more picture to lose everything already typed...so here goes again, probably shorter...

This week started with 3 days of STAAR End of Course testing and of course Friday is jeans/spirit shirts.  I'm not sure how Thursday was added in, but I will take it.  Instead of highlighting various High School spirit shirts, I thought I would post some recent Sunday Styles from the Spring.  Few recent Spring outfits were on the blog a couple of weeks ago too if you missed it.  Monday I was fortunate to be among the lucky ones to proctor and yes, that's my best pair of "active monitoring" tennis shoes.

Before moving on, Wednesday I was twinning (unplanned) with our Ag Teacher who is also my Department Chair.  He was so helpful to me last year in my first year of teaching and navigating student organization, lesson plans, grade book, campus to-dos and so many more questions.  I would have never made it through!  He has an amazing opportunity ahead for his family and it is bittersweet to see him leave.  However, I know great things are ahead!

This dress was from a "last call" rack at Francesca's which means there were only "singles" of each item left and they were 40% off. It is one of those dresses that is comfortable, requires really nothing extra and versatile to occasion.  It can be worn with heels, wedges, flats.  Perfect for a party, wedding, night out, church (which was this day) or bridal/baby shower.  I love dresses like this that do all of the work with none of the fuss, mostly meaning uncomfortable.

Because I believe in keeping it real, this day my hair was past due to be washed. However, I was working out right after church and try not to wash my hair knowing within 12 hours it will have to be done again if at all possible!  #lazy So, a little dry shampoo, teasing comb, headband and it was done.  This dress is one I've worn with heels, wedges, flip flops and even boots/legging/cardigan in the winter.  It has definitely earned it's 8:98 keep from Target clearance.  The hem is a little longer in the back, much like a favorite tank top, but in a dress.

Speaking of Target, I've never been to Target on release day of a designer collection until #LillyforTarget. Wow.  Safe to say I only got in and got this dress because of a lady who "left her spot in line because your worker said they were opening both doors" and I was outside the grocery side and a benefactor of her rant when she had finally argued enough to get the guy to open up both doors. All racks were literally emptied by the handful within about 60 seconds of women arriving to them.  It was greed at its best. Sadly, most of those items probably made their way to eBay and no one had any intention of wearing them.  This dress was the only thing I had seen in the preview I really wanted to try and get, so I was happy to have gotten it.  I received questions about the quality, it is lined, and I think in line with any Target dress quality. It has a fun v back and tie and again requires no fuss and will be great all summer!

This Easter I was intending to just wear a dress I had until I ran through Marshall's and picked up this dress from the clearance rack.  It is a (hard to see in pics) light pink with various gray watercolor marks.  I paired with gray heels and handbag.  I love a shift dress, clearly as this is 3rd of 4 dresses that is a simple shift.  This dress has still been in Marshall's recently, and for $15!!

Happy Mother's Day to all the Mama's out there, I am sure  thankful for mine! This is the same scarf from the school day pics (wore it on Cinco de Mayo) I recently found at Charming Charlie. I have looked for a while for a summer print and this one with bright pattern and orange pompom trim finally was the answer to my search! I haven't been there in a long time, however, they seem to have revised their pricing back to reasonable and I would imagine in the Houston market that is due to competing with Sam Moon. I will always support competition in the name of buy one get one FREE scarves!

When I looked back at my previous Sunday Style post, I didn't realize it has been since the end of last summer that I posted Sunday pics. You can keep up with them regularly via Facebook or Instagram. However, that posts shows 3 of the outfits included here, worn differently and proof of versatility and re-wear of my closet items, just like this scarf on Tuesday and Sunday!

Texas has had some crazy weather these last few weeks and this week looks no different. Stay safe if you're in the pattern of storms and stay strong through the finish of the school year! Summer is coming!

What I'm Wearing ~ 05.01.15 {May Day}

Hello to May!  The end of the school year is drawing near, the days are longer, the evenings sunny, the Texas weather has shown off this week, I wish I could capture the air. Cool mornings and evenings with warm sunshine in between.  And, amen for the low humidity, such a treat! After weeks of rainy days, all is green and we are not heading into summer with extreme drought conditions.

This week I felt like was all over the place as far as "wearing".  I picked up this moto vest one day on the {shocking} Target clearance rack. I think it was about $8. I've worn it for 80's day and also not as part of a costume unless you count dressing up as a teacher a costume.  Pop of turquoise peeking out and a long time version of a tassel necklace I have had. These are pretty much  everywhere, in all price ranges and easy to add to a simple T or tank. It is time to start baring arms around here which also means I've been picking up my 3lb weights in the evenings for a few quick curls and such.

Stripes and flowers are 2 of my favorite patterns to mix.  I know there are still people who aren't on the maxi-skirt train, but seriously, so easy, comfortable and available in so many color options.  Denim jackets or vests are always my go-to with these skirts. I also feel like they are a sign of summer coming. Hot pink oversize stud earrings are Walmart $2.88, which I foresee these going with my Nike shorts a lot this summer!  Did I mention 22.5 days remain with students....

Wednesday morning found temps just above 50 and that makes me a Happy Camper! I picked this tank up shopping with my bestie at Antiques Week in Round Top this Spring. I've seen Happy Camper t's and tanks for anywhere from $29 - $48, but we snapped these up for $16. I am certain this will get repeat wear over the summer, starting in 22.5 days....These colored khakis from Gap have been a favorite for a long time.  I am hoping they come out with more bright colors.  Stripe cardigan is a last year Marshalls find, again stripes are one of my go-to neutrals. And, of course leopard.

Thursday was still a little chilly, today's scarf + cardigan work uniform was perfect for days like this when afternoon temps are pushing 80 as the sleeves are lace, so not sweater warm.  I have always loved stacks of bracelets and sometimes just don't take the time to put them on in the morning, but did this day. I really love stacks that are mixed silver & gold.

Average Friday jeans + spirit shirt. It's always a fun day to give a little prize to a friend, and I had these oversize studs to drop off for my school bestie.  Little did I know she had already dropped off a surprise coffee on my desk too!  Good way to end the week. Looking back, this is the 3rd day in a row I had on some sort of leopard, today was just a little skinny belt. Excessive? Maybe.  But, I'm not judging.

Maybe I wasn't so all over the place on my wearing this week....not only did I wear leopard 3 times I also wore 2 vests?!  I've confessed my love for the puffy vest before, but apparently it goes beyond the puffy vest based on this week and since last week also included military vest.

Overall this week went fast.  Several evenings at home, lettering custom canvas, jogs in the neighborhood and a night out on a patio for crawfish.  Good times Spring time!

Blessings,

Friday Favs .... 5:00 Weekend Whistle!

It is May. There are less than 25 school days left.  It is the weekend. I will let you guess which one of those is my most favorite....

Momfessionals
Linking up for Friday favs...with AndreaErica & Narci
I set out this morning to treat my school bestie with a little May fun, and to my surprise I had a Latte treat waiting on my desk too! I love surprises and little treats are fun to give and also fun to receive!  Checked my box later in the day and a sweet friend sent snail mail (which is one of my favorite things) to my work, a great way to start and end my day!

Also, if you're not on board with oversized studs, I highly recommend! They are available everywhere from Walmart ($2.88) to Sam Moon ($5.00) to boutiques ($9.99ish) to Nordstrom (BP for $8.00) and Kate Spade ($24-$38 depending on sale).  They for sure go with  EVERYTHING.

Speaking of snail mail...I recently sent out cards to my besties.  I found these and immediately thought they would make someone's day to receive. I believe all of my friends are beautiful and sometimes we just need to be reminded.  Love to build up my sweet friends and recognize the unique gifts and talents they have and the gift of their friendship to my life. Cards are everywhere and taking a few minutes for a handwritten note will always make someone's day!

Sad news in Texas lately...the BlueBell has all been recalled.  I picked up this new flavor before the recalls happened, and hope it will come back when BlueBell is restored.  I never buy a 1/2 Gallon of ice cream, always a pint and just have a couple of spoon fulls every now and then as a favorite bedtime snack.

However, in the meantime, I found these Blueberry Wheat-fuls at Kroger recently in their "healthy/organic/whatever that section is" and they have become my favorite after school/night time snack. I don't drink milk or eat milk on cereal, please reference the BlueBell pic, that is how I like my milk. Consequently I am picky about cereal. It's usually a snack for me, not a substantial meal.  I love blueberry stuff, so thought these were worth a try!  They are delicious. I've already almost finished the 2nd box!  Also, they really do look like the picture and have a lot of blueberry topping!

While we're talking about food....last Saturday morning I caught The Pioneer Woman on Food Network featuring breakfast for dinner, which is one of my favorite things!  I thought about this hash from Saturday morning at 9:30 until Sunday evening when I had been to the grocery store and finally cooked it up! (Also peppered bacon was on 1/2 price, and that is definitely a favorite!) Back to the hash, it is so quick & easy and so good! Here's the page with official recipe, but this could be adapted so many ways!  I've had breakfast for dinner this week 4 of 5 nights.  I am also wanting to try Wild Rice pancakes from that segment.

I have been off my morning routine for some time, due to Rodeo Houston followed by a month of being sick. My snooze button won out so many days.  However, I know when I get up and get started with reading my Bible my day is better and that time is my favorite of the day.  This week I was working through a current study which took me to the armor of God.  (Ephesians 6:10-20) After thinking about putting on the armor for everyday battles I face, I was reminded of one of my favorite quotes so I quickly lettered it to save. No matter what your favorite accessory or clothing item is to put on, make sure to put on your armor every day.  There's no doubt prayer and the Word is the most effective in daily battles we face.

Speaking of good words, Melanie Shankle is such a gifted writer. I've read her blog for years and because she wrote them I read her book on children (Sparkly Green Earrings, no I don't have children) and marriage (The Antelope in the Living Room, yes, I'm single) and now she's really written to my heart with Nobody's Cuter than You. All about besties and what they mean in our lives. I'm loving this book and soaking up the gift that is my circle of friends with each story. We grew up just a few years apart and while Melanie was showing off her bangs and hot rolled hair at A&M and the baseball fields I was teasing mine up as well at SHSU and the ag barn/school farm/pasture parties. Not only is Melanie sweet in her writing, she's also sweet in her words and I am thankful for both.

And at the end of the week, I'm thankful for all of my favorites, from food on my table to besties and sweet words.

Blessings to you this weekend!
