Wisdom vs. Courage - Part 2

Couple of weeks back I wrote on wisdom, as inspired by this quote:

But, then I've been thinking about courage.

I've talked about courage a little before, a lesson I learned at a very young age, literally when I fell off my horse (actually I was certainly "thrown" when he unexpectedly hopped over a little water I didn't see) and my Dad made me get back on.  That lesson was defining.  I would have walked all the way back from that point out in a pasture on a 1000+ acre ranch, but instead I had to get back on and ride.  And, despite being SURE my arm or something was broken, I was fully in tact and had no lasting injury from that fall.

So, John Wayne's definition of courage has stuck with me...
"Courage is being scare to death, but saddling up anyway."

Now, I've passed that lesson on...having helped my nephew when he was scared riding, and literally telling him to hang on and then telling him to let go and I would catch him to get off the horse.

He had to know I would catch him. He had to trust me.    Wisdom + Courage

Isn't that our biggest fear?  That when we fall, no one will catch us?

When did we start believing we have to have it all figured out, have to be the master of all situations, resulting into crazy cycle of worry, and that's what we end up hanging on to with all of our energy??

Pride.  Our pride.  That's what gets in the way.  We want control and our plan is better.

When you have wisdom (as Biblically described) that is pure, peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy, full of good fruits, impartial and sincere then you can let go of the worry and hold on to the hope that is the anchor for the soul.

And, when the uncertainty/worry sets in, we can WISELY let go and COURAGEOUSLY cling to the Word that will always sustain us despite the circumstance we find ourselves in.

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.
Isaiah 26:3

So, just one time.  Instead of having it all figured out and holding onto your own plans...try something different, swallow your pride, do it a new way...rely on the wisdom you have gained, cling to the truth of Jesus (He will never leave us nor forsake us) and go forward courageously into whatever life brings!

Fall seven times. Get up eight.

Self: Single

So many things I've been reading lately keep pointing back to  telling your story, and your story matters.  Even if it doesn't matter to the masses, if it matters to one, it's worth it.  There's been several things that are part of "my story" that I think I'll slowly put to words.  I've just started reading "Speak" by Nish Weiseth from my reading list and maybe I should read Let's All Be Brave (by Annie F. Downs and also on my list) before I hit publish on this...but here we go....

I am single.

Yes, still single.

I don't know why.  That's the equivalent of asking a couple who's struggling with infertility (maybe unbeknownst to you) when they are going to have a baby.

We grow up thinking life goes in stages.  A person graduates High School, goes to College, finds their Mr or Mrs of their dreams, gets married, begins a career, buys a house, has a family, buy a bigger house, eventually has the average of 2.5 kids, adds in a pet or two, and begin living the family schedule.  But, reality is that's not the order of events for everyone.  Somewhere on that line, something goes out of order or just doesn't happen.  It's out of our control.

I was never the person in High School who had their plan for 5, 10, 15 years down the road.  I never had a wedding binder and magazines just waiting for the groom.  I've always thought the groom  played a part in the style, location, planning of the wedding, and until I knew who that was - there wasn't any need for planning.  I did always think I would likely be married and have a family, God willing.

More and more I have watched people struggle through these stages.  I have so many married friends who struggle with having children.  I have equal number of single friends who struggle with living in and being happy with single life.  I have friends who are "single again" due to a whole list of circumstances.  I have friends who are married, but wish they were single.  Seems like everyone is somewhere in that span of stages, and it's not always what we thought it would be, and we can't always make the next phase happen on our own.

I have a ton of married friends, I love them dearly.  I learn from them often, watch their marriages, how they parent their kids, interact with each other, manage in-laws, and so many other areas of life. These relationships are so valuable to me.  I also have single friends who we've learned to depend on each other when needed...for house hold help, pet help, grief, car troubles, illness, family struggles, friends and relationships and other areas of life.  I am by nature someone who cares deeply for and about my friends.  I don't do surface.  I am in 100%.  I have to manage these expectations because I can often be disappointed when someone isn't the same type of friend in return.  But, this is how I was created and I am thankful for all of these relationships that span less than a year to almost 20 years and how they pour into my life.

I've never really been a girl who loves the dating life.  There are those girls, the ones who are out for fancy dinners 3 nights a week on different dates.  To me that is like interviews over and over again.  I've had enough of those in my life, and truthfully if I don't sense some sort of potential connection there's a lot of  people I don't see on a regular basis that I would rather spend time with.  I've never been out for a "free meal".  In fact, I've always said "if someone could pull off a date at Whataburger, they would win me over".  Because I'm simple.  I like little things.  And, I like great friendships that turn into a great relationship and could one day be "the One".

The best of dates for me are ordinary dates, spending time doing regular things of life.  You can learn a lot about someone in the everyday.  Even running errands.  Everyone can be on their best behavior for a couple of hours at the Steak House, but what happens when some things go awry and you've never see how they handle those circumstances.  I've also always appreciated that my parents are friends, they hang out together.  A lot.  Always have.  And, I've seen them make it through challenging seasons.  And, I know, if you can't make it with just each other, you're going to really struggle to make it.  All the fine dining is nice, but can you survive if that gets stripped away and there's only peanut butter and jelly left?

I meet lots of people on a regular basis, but I'm not an online dater.  I have a friend (guy) who once told me "it's like shooting fish in a barrel".  I'm not a fish in a barrel.  It undoes me to think of someone scrolling through a list of people some app/computer program suggests to them and clicking yes or no when my picture shows up based on those results.  I also think there's a lot of, let's call it, "false advertising" in the online dating world, lack of truth for who a person really is. Maybe online dating is for you, but for me, I want to know a guy.  Who he really is, not him behind a computer screen, text screen or otherwise.

And, so I keep going.  Every relationship that ends, there's something to be learned.  Something that I think will potentially one day be critical knowledge in a marriage. The lessons learned could fill a series and I will just keep those to myself for now and protect the innocent.  One of the biggest lessons I have learned that I will share is to "Let your yes be yes and your no be no".  If more people practiced this in all arenas of life there wouldn't be so much guesswork.  I'm not just saying that for guys, it goes for girls too - don't lead a guy on with no greater intention than a "free meal".  Communicate, even when it is hard, it's better to communicate.  You'll earn greater respect by being honest and transparent in communicating than not.

I know that my worth isn't found in status of checking the box of single or married.  Beyond the expectations of this world, I know that in the eyes of Jesus I am no less because I am single. At the end of the day I'm not looking for perfect, because none of us are perfect.  I want a leader.  I want him to pursue Jesus and love like he does.  The heart and matters of the heart are a precious part of life and I want to be careful of someone's heart the same way I want them to be careful of mine.  And, I want him to be tall because I love high heels.  :)

So, despite being single.  I'm ok.  Yes, I'm a big fan of marriage, there's days I think "it would be nice if.....", and I'm certainly not wishing to never find my Mr, but most days I'm ok.  If you're feeling like you're lost because you're single, you aren't.  If you feel alone because you are, you aren't.  If you feel forgotten because you are, you aren't.  You are chosen, loved and matter just the way you are.  And, so am I. Don't substitute those feelings with someone temporary just to fill a void that turns out to leave a greater void.

Even when Mr. Right (or Mrs for my couple of guy readers) does come along, he's (she's) going to let me down, disappoint me, frustrate me, hurt my feelings and I will do the same in return.  Not intentionally.  But, because we are human and aren't perfect.  So press on. Don't fill yourself with an emptiness of "free meals"; but fill yourself with a feast of the love of heavenly Father. And, keep praying, He hears your prayers and meets you right where you are.

Need some reinforcements (I've included my favorite Bible translation)...check out Proverbs 31:25 (ESV), Romans 12:12 (ESV), Psalm 100:5 (ESV), Psalm 42:5 (ESV), Isaiah 26:3(ESV), 1 Peter 1:6 (Living Bible), Habakkuk 3:19 (Amplified Bible) , Isaiah 30:18 (Amplified), Psalm 34:18 (Message), Lamentations 3:22-25 (ESV), Isaiah 54:10 (ESV), Ephesians 4:29 (ESV) and Zephaniah 3:17 (ESV). And my favorite...

You are loved,

A Few of my Favorite Things...

I'm linking up (on Saturday) for Friday Favorites....
Momfessionals

FOOTBALL
Since it's Friday (on Saturday) I'll start with football! I love football games...High School, College and Professional!  My school is in their Inaugural Varsity Football season and I have lots of players in my classes so it is fun to watch!  Also know a kid playing for the Longhorns this year, I've always loved Aggie football and of course the Houston Texans!  Show your own style with your game day colors - add in a favorite accessory...mine is a leopard belt.  Texans tank from TJMaxx ($12.99!!), check them and Marshall's for lots of game day attire!

 PUMPKIN
I started September with one of my all time favorite things my Mom makes...Pumpkin Roll, read up on some fall treats by the pool that afternoon and my sweet school bestie gave me pumpkin treats + cider candle on Tuesday!  Keep an eye out for Pumpkin Recipes via Party with the Parks, maybe she will share her famous pumpkin chocolate chip cookies!

VERSES
There's always a few verses that speak to me in different seasons...these are a couple of my current favorites.  I've just finished Kelly Minter's Wherever the River Runs this week and am not sure which book I will start next from my Fall Reading List.  Also, working through Beth Moore's 90 Days with Jesus devotional.  Top to bottom...Ephesians 1:2, Habakkuk 3:19 and Isaiah 26:3.

BRACELETS
If you've only read one other post here, you have probably figured out I love words...and these bracelets are simple statements.  They are made by Good Work(s) Make A Difference and they donate 25% of net profits to charitable causes such as its Tools for School Campaign—an initiative to provide 10,000 backpacks and school supplies to low-income students. It's a win win purchase! Click here to see the colors and words available, of course the green is my favorite!

BABIES
I've always loved little babies, lots of people aren't fans of the newborn, but I love a tiny baby.  And, a baby after a bath in footed jammies is one of my all time favorites.  It's been a long time since the Littles were babies and I've been blessed to spend time with this sweet family over the summer. Got to babysit just little sister while brother went to Kindergarten orientation and was reading stories after bath time. She also has the most beautiful auburn hair.

PUFFER VEST
Despite not loving the cold weather, I love a good jacket, coat and vest.  My favorite this fall is camo!  This one is a perfect neutral for all occasions...I start craving time in the country in the fall, maybe target practice with the gun my Dad got for me, bonfires, ranches or this would even be great for game days! It's from JCrew Factory and I stalked them daily for markdowns + extra off promotion codes!

PROJECTS
I've been a little crafty lately...couple of mini-canvases I made for my college besties who are going through hard seasons and I attended a Faith and the Arts class at my church, Bayou City Fellowship, and drew the "Your love knows no end" on our doodle page for the session.  Picked up a simple frame at Aaron Brothers and it's new words for my house!  Those words are lyrics from one of my favorite songs by Hillsong.  Also, can of spray paint changed simple frames to metallic and I have 5x5 cards I picked up on vacation with great quotes and sayings framed for my wall.  Finally, a couple of new signs I got for my birthday.  Now to get them all arranged and hanging...

LEOPARD PUMPS
I just about wore out my leopard pumps from last year and I've been searching for a new pair...I finally decided on these...they are from BCBG and I'm embracing the cut-out trend too!  Since leopard is such a great neutral, these will go with practically everything!

THE NOONDAY COLLECTION
I'm really excited to be launching as a Noonday Collection Ambassador!  I have the opportunity to share jewelry and accessories crafted around the world by Artisans who are offered means out of a poverty stricken life.  You can shop via my site here:  Angie for Noonday, or I would love for you to host a trunk show!  Stay tuned for my launch of the line in a couple of weeks! Here's a few pieces from the collection I am in love with and wearing regularly...

DESK QUOTES
I found this box of quotes in the Target gifts section and picked it up for my desk at school.  It's a perfect thought for the day and I'm going to use some of these with my classes as well.  There's over 200 quotes in this box with the cute display and it was only $10, not available online, but you can see what store near you has them in stock via target.com!  And, I do love the little things!

What are your favorites?

Wisdom vs. Courage

So many things going on lately, where I seem to seek or feel like I need wisdom and courage. This quote started me thinking a few weeks ago because it seems like one is exclusive of the other....

But, really....what is widsom?

According to Webster....

And, according to scripture....

I want to be wise.  But, I want wisdom that is:
pure
peaceable
gentle
open to reason
full of mercy
full of good fruits
impartial
sincere

Not just knowledge and facts I can quote.

I shouldn't have to worry about when to hang on and when to let go.
Biblical wisdom will make me courageous.

The world says wisdom is based on knowledge, things I can tangibly learn and then use in some way or another.  But scripture shows me wisdom defined like character traits, so there is no amount of knowledge I can boast about.

No matter what the circumstance of life it, when it is hard and/or when it is easy, when facing tough decisions or exciting changes, when feeling confident or scared to death, we seek wisdom.  We want to know how to proceed, we want someone to tell us, to make the road easier, remove the questions for us.

But, that isn't life.

Just in my circle major life changes are going on...

Death is looming in families
Families are growing with children and through adoption
Friends are taking leaps of faith in careers
Leaving familiar and going to unfamiliar
Separation of family due to work travels & assignments
Recent loss that is still heavy and sometimes crippling

...and your circle has countless scenarios too, that we all want answers to for ourselves or for those who are seeking.  How do you make a decision?  Know what is right?  Give advice when asked?  Know what to pray?

Life is not about comparison between levels of knowlege and trying to apply to circumstance. It's not about who has the most courage and takes the biggest leap or who seems to have no courage and can't seem to ever leap.

I am fortunate to have many circles and opportunities to seek counsel from people I consider wise.  Ones who have gone before me in life experience, who may know more about something I am considering, who have been on the same road I'm on, who above all chaos know there is always hope in all circumstances regardless of how they turn out.

They approach whatever might be in question with pure, peacable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy, full of good fruit, impartial and sincere intention. They aren't concerned with what the world expects of me, they are only concerned with my heart and what is best for me and my world.  Ultimately always building me up and pointing me to put my hope in Christ and not in the circumstance or expectation of this world.

And, in return, I learn from them and Lord willing apply that same wisdom when asked by someone else who is in turn seeking me as wise counsel.  I also know my limitations and am not scared to admit them, and help seek someone who is better counsel.

Sometimes our pride wins out and self takes over.  When pride takes over and the opposite of pure, peacable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy, full of good fruit, impartial and sincere are what shows up in the attempt to utilize only self knowledge. I don't want my self to take over, I want to reflect this: "She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue." Prov 31:26.

No one is denied wisdom ...."If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him." James 1:5.

Let's be courageous to give and apply biblical wisdom to life's circumstance and seek wise counsel when needed, not just depending on ourselves and our own knowledge.

Always learning,

Self: Book Worm

I was never a reader.  In fact, I sold a collection of Cliff Notes back after college, because that's how I did my college "reading".

But, the older I've gotten I have gained a love for reading.  (This might be my highest achievement to my Librarian Mom.) :)  My reading typically picks up in the summer because I'm by a pool most weekends and usually have a book with me.  This summer, having every day as a pool option, reading a book a week was of my Summer To-Do list, and I've made it through 11 books so far. Some great, some good, some not so good and some life changing.

Throughout the summer, I've also seen several new books that have just released or are coming up soon.  Here's a few on my list for fall.  I also need an Amazon gift card! Ha!

Lysa Terkeurst - The Best Yes
Sometimes "yes" isn't always the right answer.  Learning to say "no" is hard, but one of
the best lessons in life.  This book can also be done as a Bible Study.

Annie F. Downs - Lets All Be Brave
I recently posted this quote from her book...
"Say yes to the situations that stretch you and
scare you and ask you to be a better you thatn you think you can be."
Challenged?  Me too!  Scary?  Yes! Let's be brave!

Sophia Amoruso - #GIRLBOSS
Recommended by someone I admire, and on the verge of a new venture (Coming Soon)
I can't wait to read this one! Trusting your instincts and following your gut.
Scary?  See above - yes to the right things and brave.  :)

Jen Hatmaker - Interrupted
I've been a fan of Jen's blog, specifically she is hilariously authentic.
Sometimes life gets interrupted and sometimes we need to have our lives interrupted. This is a re-release of her book, she says with lots of editing and additional content.

Nish Weiseth - Speak
Your story matters.  This has been a significant word to me this summer.
No matter how insignificant or ordinary you might think your story is, it matters.

Kelly Minter - Wherever the River Runs
I've read Kelly's books/Bible Studies before, and am excited to read this book.
I happened to catch it on a flash sale FREE for Kindle and just started it at the nail salon this week.

All pictures and links from Amazon.com.
Most of these books are also sold in Barnes & Noble, Lifeway and other local/church bookstores.

These are my version of "self help" books, most are Biblically based and reference scripture throughout.  Reads that challenge me, refine me, push me out of my comfort zone and teach me.  The writers aren't the end-all-be-all, they are just a messenger.  They can't replace the Bible, but the truths they write speak to me as a supplement to my Bible study.

A few other authors I love....Jennie Allen, Angie Smith, Melanie Shankle, Ann Voskamp and for Bible Studies...Beth Moore, Priscilla Shirer, Angela Thomas just to name a few if you're looking for good reads/studies.

I'm typically reading more than one book at a time, shocking I know considering the Cliff Notes comment above!  One of these types of books and a "lighter" book...fiction, historical fiction or chic-lit.  Have a favorite you've read lately?  Share it!

Book worms unite,

Self: Distracted

As the school days were winding down, mainly the number of days left to make my lunch, the worry started building up about what I would do this summer.  A lot of free time, a somewhat hard Spring, and an uneasiness settling in about how to fill that time.  I talked to people about potential summer jobs, but there were obstacles to working full time due to a couple of commitments I had.  I started receiving an unusual amount of recruiter/referral emails for "Corporate jobs" as the summer approached, and I wrestled with should I go back to Corporate?! I achieved my teaching certificate, and that was my goal. (Hi Principals -- don't worry!)  I put out the word I would be willing to babysit in May, and I quickly had a lot of response and started to re-think my plan, how to use my time.

Ultimately, I was looking to be distracted.  Because distracted is easier than dealing a lot of the times.  To be distracted means not having to have quiet, unaccounted for time that allows the mind to wander and the questions to arise and the doubt to set in and the lies speak louder than truth.

But, what I got was the sweetest gift in the quiet, unaccounted for time, allowing my mind to wander, ask hard questions and soak on truth over lies.  Most mornings started like this...

And days were filled...

Road trips to see sweet friends who live out of town.  The friends you pick up right where you left off.  The porch sitting and sipping and conversation that encourages, strengthens, challenges and speaks truth to you.

Being available to mourn loss with besties.  Intentional to spend time with those I don't get to see very often.  Day trip with my work bestie for fun outside of the daily grind.

Breakfasts; because that is my very favorite.  Sometimes with friends, sometimes with a book.  Equally satisfying.

Fishing because life to me is so rich on the water

Most weeks included a few hours with these two, a sweet family that shared their littles with me, a backyard I love, a little reprieve from the suburban/city life.  Countless hours with other friends and their littles.

Time spent on my own porch.  Reading and letting the B-dog enjoy some sunshine...

Get away to the beach with a dear friend for a few days.  The agenda was only...Sun + Sand + Eating + Workouts on the Beach + Coffee + Visiting.

So much time spent on the Restless Project, if you're restless, and not sure why, grab this book!! Doing a Bible study with friends, planning for a new venture to come, painting and being creative.  Discovering and re-discovering the things that drive me.

And coffee shops....

And lots and lots of pool time...

And afternoon reading turned nap time on the couch...

Most of all 2 different weeks with these 3...My favorite littles.  Being an Aunt is one of the greatest gifts.  Living life with them for days at a time is a highlight of summer for me.  They deserve their own post.  They are a joy beyond words!

...and so many other things...walks with friends, church events, jogging my neighborhood, bike rides, happy hour, concerts, fund raisers, late night errands with besties, lunches and dinners, prayer nights and on and on....

For all the good times, there were hard times.  But, nobody hangs hard times on the wall.

There were challenges of friendships.
There were unanswered questions.
There were runs filled with tears.
There were lies of false shame.
There were disappointments.
There were lessons learned.
There were feelings hurt.

As the last week of summer approaches....I can say, it has been the perfect summer. It has been a gift.  There have been so many things I've learned, so many memories made and so much growth.  I wouldn't trade the summer for anything.  It's not been perfect.  But, it's been perfect for me.

Not distracted.
Intentional.

Soaking up the last of these days,
