Space: Kitchen Cabinets & Drawers

Seems like the Bathroom organization was a popular topic, so here's a little peek into the kitchen.  As with my bathroom, I have half size drawers from before and a few less cabinets.  I realize this isn't NYC, and the amount of cabinets I have is still plenty, but it is a downsize from before.  I had to pull everything out of boxes and start over with sorting and figuring out my new space.  Here's a few tricks for maximizing smaller spaces...

My drawers.  They are 9" across, and the hunt was on to find a silverware organizer that would fit in a 9" drawer and hold 2 types of forks, 2 types of spoons, knives and serving utensils. I finally found it at Walmart and squeezed it in.  In other places, I've used this for my silverware and it was all sorted and spaced out...

Now, however this is the largest drawer I have so I filled this up with utensils and tools I use most often.  All of my tea/tablespoons, knives, graters/peelers, tongs and openers.  Yes, a couple of those are antler horn handles.  And, if you have been around here a while, you know my favorite color is green.  That big chef knife in the front, brand is AR+Cook, found at Marshall's and they are great, inexpensive, knives!

Other drawers I have are for bags/wrap and utensils that don't fit in the drawer above.  The back of this has a few extras, same bins I use in my bathroom drawers to hold things I don't use as often, but keeps them from being in a heap that I have to ruffle through every time.

Cabinet storage was tricky and I now have my Wilton Armetele collection on display vs stacked in a cabinet, simply due to space.

Dishes are all stacked in one cabinet, directly across from the dishwasher for easy unloading.  Place setting for 12 with 3 sizes of places, dipper bowls, cereal bowls and coffee cups.  I also have dessert plates and few colored extra bowls here with my dishes.

Since I am tall, I appreciate cabinets that go as high as possible.  I would definitely put 42" cabinets in a house I designed.  And, a 3rd rack in a closet but that is a separate topic....
Back to the kitchen, I have a couple of wire baskets that I can see through, holding various tools I don't use everyday, stashed on my top shelves.

For pans, they are stacked, but utilize extra add-in shelves for space and to separate lids, pan size, etc.  These shelves are sold everywhere from the Dollar Store ($) to the Container Store ($$$$) and vary in size, allowing you to easily create additional shelf space and give you quick access to things you need/use on a regular basis without always having to dig through a big stack.

Finally, the ever popular plastic storage containers that can easily over take a cabinet(S) and said cabinets eat lids.  I separate my square storage and round storage in these 2 stacking baskets.  I realize this is a "small" collection compared to lots of people, but reality is you don't use up all those containers, some don't even have lids, some the lids are microwave warped, and some just need to be tossed.  Make it a kid project and have them help you sort/separate and organize a reasonable amount of reusable containers.  Don't let them overtake your kitchen.

Final tip....I hardly ever fill the sink with dishwater and wash a whole sink full of dishes.  Though I used to have previously discussed my dishwasher sorting (read: OCD). I typically wash along the way as I'm cooking/baking and use a re-fillable soap sponge.  However, the green tipped ones get so yucky because stuff sticks to them.  Enter the Scotch Brite Easy Clean non-stick sponge...it really does work and if you do dishes with one of these types of sponges, get rid of the green and yellow one and get this purple one!  I promise you'll be glad you did!

The arrangement of your cabinets and drawers isn't the same for everyone.  How you use your space is unique to you.  However, finding a system that works where things you reach for regularly are accessible, a drawer/cabinet doesn't explode out onto the floor when you open it and you can quickly put dishes/pans and utensils away will make your kitchen a less stressful place.

Happy Cooking,

Link Up: Friday Favs

Linking up for Friday favs...with Andrea, Erica & Narci

First I want to say Hi to new readers from the link up.  Loved getting comments from you last week and I hope your Target stocked the cheetah looking running tights!

Happy Friday to you!  Here's a few of my favorites this week...

Monday night I went to a  favorite things party to kick off our Women's Discipleship Group at church. It was so fun to see various things that are people's favorites.  I had to take a dessert, and I took a signature recipe from the 4G (what I call my parents place) of Cheesecake Bars which is perfect for Monday night because it's best when made ahead.  My gift to trade was these cute foil notebooks from Target, they come in several designs.  I added a metallic pen (by Pentel which apparently only Hobby Lobby sells) with each journal.
And, here's a picture from the party.  My cheesecake bars are top left pic on square platter alongside lots of other goodies.   And, I'm in the bottom left pic, sporting my Nike tempo shorts + hoodie uniform which is no surprise on an evening after a work day.  Ha!
Thank you to our Women's Minister for posting this pic
Speaking of work days, last week I mentioned about compression socks when running.  I first bought compression socks when I traveled full time and spent my days on my feet working trade shows. Sometimes when I would get back to my hotel my feet and legs were so tired. I packed these in my suitcase before I left and wore them lots of nights.  And, while flipping through a magazine (which is another one of my favorite things) recently I saw a note on "feel good socks".  These are some kind of fancy socks they featured, (read: which are 3 or 4 times the price of Dr. Scholl's), but Dr. Scholl's will do the trick.  If you haven't tried compression socks, hit up your Walmart or Target and give them a try.  I still put them some nights/evenings after teaching and being on my feet all day. I realize this might qualify me as old-lady-status, but seriously, give them a try!

I also mentioned about new Buffalo Check shirt my friend picked up for me last week.  This week I picked up some buffalo check for my little friend, though I'm not sure he's as happy about it as I was.  But, for $3, we'll take it!! And, he will be the cutest dog on the block when the cooler weather comes!  Thank you Target $1 bins!

After the summer of mornings sitting at my kitchen bar reading my Bible, a couple of books and doing a Bible Study I have really made an effort to continue that time with the start of school. I typically spend about 45 minutes every morning in study. This has become my favorite time of day. You may not be a "morning person", but I believe you can learn to enjoy this time. It doesn't require talking to anyone, except God, and it's like a workout, you'll never regret doing it. Here's my current line-up...
- Jesus Today - If you need a change from Jesus Calling, this is also by Sarah Young, if you have no idea what to read or how to start, pick up Jesus Calling from just about any retailer around including the grocery store.
- The Best Yes - by Lysa Terkeurst - current read from my books list and lots of insight on making decisions, which I've previously blogged about here and here.
- My Bible - I read from the ESV typically, but usually have my phone handy where I have Bible Gateway installed and I will look up different versions of verses for variation and also check the verse of the day.
- 90 Days with Jesus - by Beth Moore - This is my current study I'm going through. Just finished studying several of miracles of healing Jesus performed. We all have wounds and struggles and need healing, he is the ultimate physician. He doesn't take away the scars, but allows us to live with them and they are part of our story.

Last thing for this week, my new Texas baseball cap! I  love a baseball cap, especially on days I'm running errands or days I really should have washed my hair.  Unfortunately this isn't acceptable dress code for school (see previous what I'm wearing posts to inspire your closet), but immediately after school when your hair was in a side ponytail for 80's day, this is perfection. (click here for this week's What I'm Wearing including 80's day) The hat is by Judith March and I got it from Southern Trends.  I've shopped her boutique before and was a stalker to find this hat. Thank you to the sweet people at Judith March who told me  places that would be stocking this when orders shipped out, I got on a wait list (almost 2 months ago) and Meagan at Southern Trends told me the remaining hats were sold out in 2 hours when they arrived this week.  BUT, she has other cute Texas hats on her site...check them out here.  Sorry, I'm no big time blogger w/ discount codes, but she posts codes a lot on Instagram, so follow her there!  :)
Oh, and this quote, it's a Primitives by Kathy sign, which is one of my favorites for black and white signs. I have a gallery wall of them but snapped this pic the other day to remember this particular sign and saying.

Have a great weekend with no regrets!

Link Up: Friday Favs for cooler weather!

Momfessionals
Linking up for Friday favs...with Andrea, Erica & Narci

Last weekend was the first hint of Fall, a few of my fall favorites all made an appearance...

Friday night -- I love a rainy night!  I had dinner with a sweet friend and family, then a trip to Target, in search of new fall creamers (found!) and pumpkin oreos (not found!).  I love family dinners, it's one of the blessings of being single and one of the places you really get to know people.  I really want some Hunter rain boots, but just haven't been able to bite that bullet yet...so for now the Academy specials are still working out.
First thing Saturday morning, I made a cup of coffee with new creamer!  I love finding new creamers, this one was delicious and the Pumpkin Spice from International Delight is as well!
I also found couple of nail polishes for fall on Friday night whilst walking, talking and browsing Target with my school bestie...Left: Bahama Mama and Right: Dressed to Kilt.  I tried out Bahama Mama and it is much darker color than the purple it looks in the bottle.  I'm definitely a fan!

Change in the weather means a change in the uniform, so traded in my Nike tempo shorts for leggings while running errands Saturday.  This was the first day "feels like" was less than the "real" temp!  These leggings are a fun change of pace from solid black ones I about wore out last year!

I've mentioned before I love browsing TJ Maxx, Marshall's and Ross for great deals. Found this subtly fancy workout top and tried it out on my jog. It wasn't near as cool on my jog, but this top passed the non-chaffing test, so for $16.99 it's a definite win! And, I keep seeing/reading about compression socks, so even though this looks like a runner outfit ca. 1970, I did like the taller socks/support.
Saturday night...on the town.  A band playing outside on the patio, breeze, good friends, two-stepping...perfect night.  My favorite in transition is long sleeves and shorts and I couldn't wait to wear this new buffalo check, but it's been SO hot! Best part about this shirt is my school bestie texted me a pic of it and said "$12.99 want it?".  YES!!  Best deal ever...from Ross!  I've hunted high and low for buffalo check, and thankfully my friend had her eye out for me too!  First outing for a pair of booties on this night too!
Who doesn't wish for an endless weekend every now and then??  This is one of Bath and Body Work's signature scents and I have been looking for new everyday perfume, having had several failed attempts.  But, this one...I am liking more and more every day I wear it!
And, just when the weekend is coming to a close and the 90-degree temps show back up on the forecast I lit up my B&BW Pumpkin Pecan Waffles candle and soaked up a little more of the fall weekend spirit!  Other fun kitchen adds for fall are dishtowels from Dollar Bins at Target and kitchen soap from B&BW too.  Bath and Body Works currently has lots of pumpkin scents, and after smelling all of them I wished I had a pumpkin pie or pumpkin roll at home to snack on!!
Thank you for reading...keep up on Facebook or click link for Bloglovin to connect with me!

Happy Friday!!

A Few of my Favorite Things...

I'm linking up (on Saturday) for Friday Favorites....
Momfessionals

FOOTBALL
Since it's Friday (on Saturday) I'll start with football! I love football games...High School, College and Professional!  My school is in their Inaugural Varsity Football season and I have lots of players in my classes so it is fun to watch!  Also know a kid playing for the Longhorns this year, I've always loved Aggie football and of course the Houston Texans!  Show your own style with your game day colors - add in a favorite accessory...mine is a leopard belt.  Texans tank from TJMaxx ($12.99!!), check them and Marshall's for lots of game day attire!

 PUMPKIN
I started September with one of my all time favorite things my Mom makes...Pumpkin Roll, read up on some fall treats by the pool that afternoon and my sweet school bestie gave me pumpkin treats + cider candle on Tuesday!  Keep an eye out for Pumpkin Recipes via Party with the Parks, maybe she will share her famous pumpkin chocolate chip cookies!

VERSES
There's always a few verses that speak to me in different seasons...these are a couple of my current favorites.  I've just finished Kelly Minter's Wherever the River Runs this week and am not sure which book I will start next from my Fall Reading List.  Also, working through Beth Moore's 90 Days with Jesus devotional.  Top to bottom...Ephesians 1:2, Habakkuk 3:19 and Isaiah 26:3.

BRACELETS
If you've only read one other post here, you have probably figured out I love words...and these bracelets are simple statements.  They are made by Good Work(s) Make A Difference and they donate 25% of net profits to charitable causes such as its Tools for School Campaign—an initiative to provide 10,000 backpacks and school supplies to low-income students. It's a win win purchase! Click here to see the colors and words available, of course the green is my favorite!

BABIES
I've always loved little babies, lots of people aren't fans of the newborn, but I love a tiny baby.  And, a baby after a bath in footed jammies is one of my all time favorites.  It's been a long time since the Littles were babies and I've been blessed to spend time with this sweet family over the summer. Got to babysit just little sister while brother went to Kindergarten orientation and was reading stories after bath time. She also has the most beautiful auburn hair.

PUFFER VEST
Despite not loving the cold weather, I love a good jacket, coat and vest.  My favorite this fall is camo!  This one is a perfect neutral for all occasions...I start craving time in the country in the fall, maybe target practice with the gun my Dad got for me, bonfires, ranches or this would even be great for game days! It's from JCrew Factory and I stalked them daily for markdowns + extra off promotion codes!

PROJECTS
I've been a little crafty lately...couple of mini-canvases I made for my college besties who are going through hard seasons and I attended a Faith and the Arts class at my church, Bayou City Fellowship, and drew the "Your love knows no end" on our doodle page for the session.  Picked up a simple frame at Aaron Brothers and it's new words for my house!  Those words are lyrics from one of my favorite songs by Hillsong.  Also, can of spray paint changed simple frames to metallic and I have 5x5 cards I picked up on vacation with great quotes and sayings framed for my wall.  Finally, a couple of new signs I got for my birthday.  Now to get them all arranged and hanging...

LEOPARD PUMPS
I just about wore out my leopard pumps from last year and I've been searching for a new pair...I finally decided on these...they are from BCBG and I'm embracing the cut-out trend too!  Since leopard is such a great neutral, these will go with practically everything!

THE NOONDAY COLLECTION
I'm really excited to be launching as a Noonday Collection Ambassador!  I have the opportunity to share jewelry and accessories crafted around the world by Artisans who are offered means out of a poverty stricken life.  You can shop via my site here:  Angie for Noonday, or I would love for you to host a trunk show!  Stay tuned for my launch of the line in a couple of weeks! Here's a few pieces from the collection I am in love with and wearing regularly...

DESK QUOTES
I found this box of quotes in the Target gifts section and picked it up for my desk at school.  It's a perfect thought for the day and I'm going to use some of these with my classes as well.  There's over 200 quotes in this box with the cute display and it was only $10, not available online, but you can see what store near you has them in stock via target.com!  And, I do love the little things!

What are your favorites?

Space: Bathroom Cabinets + Drawers

One of my favorite things about staying in hotels is the unlimited supply of clean, precisely folded towels.  I'm a towel re-user at home - always was growing up - always will be.  I realize that's not how some roll, but most people I know will re-use a towel a couple of times.

Not at a hotel.

I am not on board for their "recycle" campaigns.  Every day, I toss all the used ones in the tub and await a new freshly folded stack when I return.  This was one of the little luxuries of life on the road when I was traveling for a year.  I didn't have a home, lived out of a suitcase, traveled full time and had constant supply of clean towels in hotels.  It's the little things for me!

My Mom stayed home with us when we were kids and she did all the household chores until we were old enough to start taking them on.  I still don't like to dust because that was my chore.  But, neither does my Mom, so I think I honestly get that dislike.  Ha!  Another chore I had was folding clothes.  I learned how to and then folded stacks of my Dad's white undershirts and boxers in precise same-sized stacks and also our towels and wash cloths.  All of them folded/faced the same direction.  Knowing how to fold white T's comes in handy because that's part of my uniform, and I helped a newlywed friend figure out how to fold her husband's undershirts!

I still fold my towels and washcloths like I learned growing up.

I realize that this can make some people lose their mind and is completely useless-waste-of-time to others.  But, for me, it's a little bit of order in what could otherwise become another chaotic cabinet.  Maybe it's because that's how I learned, it takes me no less time to fold like this than it would to fold in all different directions.

Lots of homes have "open storage" concepts now and exposed towels folded nicely can be a part of decor in the bath.  Even partially folding then rolling them is another option depending on your shevles/display.

Another part of keeping a bathroom in order are the drawers.  Hotels that had bathroom drawers were a little more like home when I was on the road, shoutout to Candlewood Suites! Now, I have the tiniest drawers known to man in my current bathroom, literally less than 5" wide.  They aren't handy.  But, they are what I have.  So, my stuff is divided up between them and I use little open weave baskets to help keep some things separate, while not looking like the drawer is full of dividers.   Here's a couple.

These organizers can be found in all shapes and sizes to fit any drawers and from Container Store to Marshall's to Dollar Tree, so get whatever works for you.

In contrast to tiny drawers, I have cabinets with shelves that are about 2' deep x 2 ' wide x 2' high... and stuff can get lost in there; you don't know what you have to you just buy more because you can't see it.  So, as I was unpacking into my bathroom, I took baskets and containers I had and used them for all different things...

Basket front left for lotion, yes, a girl needs more than one kind...sometimes with a little sparkle, sometimes a little firming, sometimes a little scent and sometimes not.  Also in there are specific soap and lotion for manicure and aloe for after sun.  Another smaller basket holds hair products.  Behind them are classic cheap plastic shoe boxes again found at any Walmart, Target or Container Store.  They are see-through to know what is in them and stack neatly in the cabinet.  Mine are filled with:
   --Spare make-up
--Sewing kit, lint roller, shoe shine sponge, etc.
--All forms of travel sized necessities (which was a large collection after living on the road)
   --Nail polish
--First Aid - bandaids of all sizes, gauze, tape, etc.

If you don't know where to begin with getting a little organized, just start small.  Maybe the first step is cleaning out all the old things you don't use, are out of date or pretty much empty.  Then start with what works for you, which cabinets and drawers do you use most often? What products and things do you reach for most often? Make them easy to get to!  Have no fear, there's a few things on top of my counter.  But, it's not cluttered with all of my products and make-up!

I leave lotion I use everyday after the shower on the counter right by my shower.  I leave my hair tools out on the counter, I use them every day.  If necessary, I can put them under the cabinet when not in use.  If you have littles around, they probably can't stay out because they could be dangerous, so find an easy space/way to store them when not in use.  The rest of the counter is things I use on a regular basis and of course words, because I love words.

The display behind cabinets and inside drawers doesn't have to be Pinterest worthy.  It has to function for you, your kids, your spouse, and who ever else might use the space.  So make it work for you!  Find baskets and boxes around the house, or slowly look for them when you're out and about.  And, if you want to know how to fold towels, I can help you.  Also with fitted sheets. But, that's for another day! :)

Happy organizing!

Space: Words

If these walls could talk...

I'm a lover of words; sayings, quotes and verses.  Words that make you think, inspire and remind you.  There have been so many times I refer back to a quote, phrase or Bible verse can say just what I'm thinking and serves as a reminder to me.

My house is filled with words.  In fact, there's only a handful of things in my house/hanging on my walls that don't include words.  Here's a look around...

The living room...the oar on the wall was found during Hurricane Ike clean-up in Galveston in 2008.  The signs on this wall are portions of verses, lyrics and other quotes.

Yesterday is history - Tomorrow is your future - Today is your life - Live it

The bath...
-- humor-no clothes allowed in the shower
-- a verse over my mirror to remember to think on the things that are noble, right, pure and lovely
-- and God loves you when you dance!

The kitchen walls ...
The sign I see most often in my house is
"Because when you stop & look around this life is pretty amazing."
It is.  And, I often need to be reminded of that despite the difficult times, it is still amazing.

Another favorite in the kitchen is a John Wayne quote:
"Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway"
This reminds me of my Dad, and learning as a young girl when I got thrown, literally,
off my horse and had to get back up and ride even when I was scared.

Perhaps my favorite wall in my house - the dining room.
Most of these are Primitives by Kathy signs, but the middle one is a handmade sign from a friend.

Click to enlarge any of the pictures and read the signs...words should inspire you and challenge you.  They do daily in my house!   Several of these signs are gifts and/or picked out from my travels, so beyond the saying they have additional meaning to me.

And, finally, the last one I see before I go to sleep and the first one when I wake up...

Linking up with Kelly's Korner for Gallery Walls...

Blessings,
