Next time won't you sing with me...

I don't remember learning letters and numbers.  I'm sure my Mom sang along with me, practicing over and over again until I could recognize and say my numbers and letters. I feel like I just grew up knowing them. I do remember having to "erase well" on my homework and making sure my letters and numbers displayed neatly.

In recent years I've sang the ABCs and practiced letters with the Littles. It is so sweet to watch them go from babbles to now reading books and writing in full sentences. I have their artwork displayed in my classroom and each time I see them they have learned a little more.

But, I can't imagine learning to recognize, read and write numbers and letters as a grown up.

I have been volunteering for several months with an organization who teaches English to Afghan and Iraqi immigrant women during the day.  In the evenings we meet with them to practice conversational English.

Tonight we did a craft, making washi tape bookmarks.  As we were talking, we learned their current lessons are about alphabet letters and numbers. We talked about first learning the alphabet and teaching with the alphabet song. I sang it, we all laughed, but next time won't you sing with me? Her son was singing it as we were working. As we were working I asked the Mother there tonight to spell her name, I was going to letter her name on a bookmark.  She looked at me, then to her daughter for help.

She didn't know how to spell her name.

I was reminded of yesterday in church, sermon on loving people where they are.  Having no agenda for any relationship with them.  Tonight that sermon resonated for me. I volunteer through my church, but we are simply there to help practice English, and show them Jesus. Our initiative is to build relationships with the women and children, not to preach to them, or try to change their beliefs, but to show up, consistently, and build relationships. Our actions will show Jesus, eventually our words will.

We practiced saying and recognizing numbers, both written and with me holding up fingers.  She would look to her children and me for help.

We practiced saying and recognizing letters. Again, she looked to her children and me for help. I drew dotted lines for her to follow to write her name in English.  We practiced recognizing the letters of her name, and her daughter's name.

She has such a strong desire to learn.

I have to build trust in her that I want to help her, to equip her for life here in the US.

I thought of papers that she might have to sign for her children. She can't read them or write to fill them out. I thought of grocery stores and restaurants and all the places we dart in and out of never thinking twice about how much we read and write on a daily basis.  She doesn't understand them.

She understands love.  She understands a smile and a pat on the back as encouragement.

These means to learning translate universally no matter what the language barrier is and no matter what the "lesson" is.  Far beyond numbers and letters, love and encouragement teach, remove fear and build confidence.

Our time came to a close.  She told her daughter to ask me if I wanted to come home with them. The home, our most sacred of places, she would have me in her home.

Tonight made me pause.  Stop and remember.  Don't we all want someone to sing with us? Not to us, not for us, but with us. Until we can sing on our own.

Blessings,

What I'm Wearing ~ 02.13.15 {Valentine's Week}

Happy Valentine's Day!  I hope your day is surrounded by all the people and things you love.  Whether that means a special someone, your besties, doing something just for yourself, spending time with your family or any combination, have a great day!

Disclaimer: What I'm Wearing is in hopes inspiration for your closet, that I can give you some ideas from what I'm wearing. What fits you doesn't always fit me. What fits me, doesn't always fit you. So, we all know the style of jeans that work best for us, the brands of shoes we love, etc. I'm not a "linker" to buy all of these outfits here. Truth be told, a lot of my clothes are many many years old and I pick up things all around the place. I'm don't update my wardrobe every season with the latest and greatest. I don't have signed up for Pinterest, so if there's something you like, you can "pin it" to save. Hopefully you're just inspired, maybe by something you have and didn't think about putting it together or maybe you are just looking for a simple accessory to add in and these posts can give you some ideas.

Before I took on a friend's challenge to wear pink or red every day in February until Valentine's Day I wore this on Monday!  Gap cropped black pants with suede heels and a cross print top.  I was recently at Walmart and saw they have these layer necklaces for $7 and they come in lots of fun colors.  I got mine from Sam Moon I think for close to the same price, but if you're looking for fun accessory, these are great necklaces! If you see a bright almost neon green one show up on here, you'll know I caved and got it at Walmart....

Pink/Red challenge accepted for the rest of the week! Tuesday I added a little variety to my leopard collection with this magenta/navy/taupe scarf. Wore it with navy pants and taupe booties.  This top is the same one from a couple of weeks ago layered under my camo shirt.  I ordered 2 of these scarfs and gave one as a hostess gift at Craft Night! :)

I realized on Tuesday when I got to school I missed a jeans day. I hate to miss jeans day.  I really wanted a make-up day, but alas, I didn't get that. However palazzo pants are just about like pajamas, so it was ok.  Pink palazzos also meet the wear pink and red challenge, so it was a win win!  These pants will also show up from time to time with cowboy boots during rodeo! You know that's a Hanes T peeking out too! :) If you're not a believe in the Hanes T by now, you should be!

Since Friday is a jeans day and requires school spirit shirt Thursday I wore my heart on my sleeve Thursday.  With of course a little leopard peeking out...

TGIF and it's a 3 DAY WEEKEND!! Amen!!  This week has seen 3 days at school until 5pm and 2 days until 4pm. Thank goodness for the holiday.  Friday was PINK OUT for #PositiveMoJo!  Our Soccer Coach's daughter was diagnosed and treated for cancer last Fall. She had scans last week and there is a new tumor, so they are determining what do do and how to proceed with a second round of treatment. It is amazing to see students across all grades, sports and organizations support MoJo with big bows and pink!  Would you pray for her?

Here's the week in review!

Wherever this Valentine's Day finds you, I pray that you remember the only One who will love and pursue you through all of life's ups and downs is Jesus. He loves you today and every day!

Friday Favorites ~ Moments

My favorite thing about this Friday?  It's another 3-day weekend! Amen. Hope you have had a great week, here's a few favorite things from this week for me...

Sunday at church we started a new sermon series, Flourish.  That was my word, tucked away for all of 2014, I really soaked on what it meant to flourish and am excited to see  the teachings from our Pastors throughout this series. The whole series will be available online via podcast, click here to listen along.  We also sang a new (to me) song on Sunday by Bethel Music, Ever Be. It is based on Psalm 34:1 - I will extol the Lord at all times, his praise will always be on my lips.  (NIV)  I soaked on that verse as I was preparing Monday morning to lead my Discipleship Group, safe to say it will be added to my iPod playlist soon!

We are in the midst of a kindness campaign at school.  Our Student Council (commonly referred to these days as "StuCo") has several initiatives for students to participate in and share kindness including compliments to share and pay if forward clips. I had a student clip this one on me and I paid it forward to another student this week. It is fun to see students discover a clip on their backpack or somewhere they weren't expecting it. A little word of kindness really goes a long way and I'm glad we participate in initiatives like this to encourage our students.

This week was such a glorious week of sunshine.  It was a little warm for February, but the temps have dropped back off from 80's on Monday and will be cooler again next week. The first days of warm {humidity free} sunshine definitely give me a renewed energy! Even though I worked a little, or a lot, late most days this week I got in a couple of jogs in the sunshine. These were especially refreshing days for me after a couple of weeks that seemed really long and trying

One of the things I was excited about this year was a new planner. #NerdAlert The one I got didn't work for me....I advertised it on eBay, SOLD it and ordered a new one that arrived this week. The packaging was so fun including a word for the year Ink Well Press includes with all planners. Mine was "Explore"...wonder what all that can word take on for the rest of 2015.  If I could just get a few minutes to get my life organized and written down, I should be set. I missed a jeans day at school this week and was so mad because I LOVE jeans. I directly blamed it on my current planner crisis. Here's to weeks and months filled with intentional time, dreams, creative ventures, friends, family, hobbies, volunteering, school, spontaneous and the unknown.

My School Bestie hosted a Valentine Craft Night this week that was so fun! She had several craft options for us to make, delicious treats {hello red velvet mini cheesecakes with Oreo crusts} and my favorite part...table full of girls laughing, crafting, snacking and sharing life. There were lots of things going on in lives around that table, but life shared together with friends old and new is one of my all time favorite things.  I left the light on for some "sun" on my tulips while I was gone, when I came home they sure were showing off!  Fresh flowers was certainly a good resolution

So, really this week, and most weeks, my favorite things are little moments and memories that happen during the week. Nothing grand or overly significant. I hope you can look back on years of planners/journals/photos and life and despite the hard days call to mind memories and moments that seemed small or insignificant, but you hold them near and dear as favorites!

Blessings and Valentine love,

Details....not by chance or happenstance

This year (September 2014 - May 2015) I am part of a year long Women's Discipleship Program at my church.  When I signed up I knew it was a big commitment to take on.  We meet every. Monday. night. There are so many Mondays that I don't want to drive 30-40 miles into the city, I am tired, I want to stay home, I want to do something that I choose. But, I committed. And, I'm glad I did. There is refinement of self simply in committing to and sticking with something despite the selfish part of me that wants to focus on "what else I could be doing".

Throughout the last 5 months as I have met with my group, served and studied together with large group and been taught in Leaders group there have been so many things I've learned and also an equal number of things I've witnessed in the lives of others. Since High School I have been part of various women's Bible Studies and groups, taught by peers to much older and wiser women and everything in between.  It is truly a gift to have the opportunity to live life alongside this current group, varying in age, stage and season of life.

This week was my week to lead our Large Group.  Not so much teach, but facilitate discussion from our study over the previous weeks.  We had 3 chapters to discuss...Adoption, Holy Spirit and Fruit of the Spirit.  All of which we could have spent hours on individually.

During our discussion we were talking about the Holy Spirit. An at times "mystical" being to some, hard to grasp concept of the Trinity {Father - Son - Holy Spirit} which Christians believe in. The Spirit is the Counselor, the Intercessor, the Advocate, the Standby, the Strengthener, the Helper. The very being that is promised to us as believers in Christ, will be with us, forever. For reference, see John 14:15-26.

As we started sharing how this is applicable to our own lives, how we know the Spirit is in us, the details of life stared coming out....

The conversation at home that the Pastor spoke the very same question
to open the sermon on Sunday morning.

The word that was my word all last year, that is now the title of our new sermon series.

The friend who reaches out and meets a very specific prayer need
that they had no idea you prayed for.

The "unexplainable" change in a child towards obedience and action.

The conversation with someone about a hard topic that before never knew "why I would
go through that" and now it applies and speaks directly to someone.

This happens on both the receiving and giving side.

I have had a couple of specific instances to the details lately...

A friend who is in a 2 year long battle that is wearing her thin. This week I commented and encouraged her on something specific, a need that I didn't really know she had, but it was an answer to prayer for her.  Detail. Specific for her.

The word, that was my word, Flourish.  I soaked on that word all year last year, thinking I was much more floundering than flourishing at times. Our new sermon series wouldn't have near the connection for me if I hadn't had that word for a year.  I know what flourish really means - not dependent on circumstance or things, but that I am rooted and will flourish despite the circumstances.  Detail. Specific for me.

I drove down a street last week that I hadn't been on for several months. The last time I was there I had a pretty significant conversation with someone as I was arriving to a meeting.  As I turned back on that street, that whole conversation and circumstance began to replay.  A couple days later one of my besties specifically asked me about the situation. I hadn't mentioned it, there was no significance in the place I went to her, but she was prompted and asked.  Detail. Specific to me.

You can, and our society does, attribute all these things to "chance". However, as someone of faith in Christ circumstances like these are not chance.

From our study: "The good news is that the Spirit is at work wooing, pulling, pushing, leading us into truth.  He is constantly leading us to Jesus Christ who is truth incarnate....The great passion of the Spirit is that human beings know Christ in all his fullness and then evaluate everything in light of him.  The Spirit is radically Christ centered." Discipleship Essentials by Greg Ogden

It isn't about me asking "just the right question", or someone mystically knowing the words I need, or asking me "out of the blue".  It is the Spirit in me revealing and showing me the ultimate love of Christ and his pursuit of me.  He is in the details. No detail is by chance.  No detail is by happenstance. All details are with purpose to draw me closer to Jesus through his Spirit.

I pray that you are both a giver and receiver of these details in life. Never dismissing them as chance, but recognize Jesus wooing you to himself through the details.

Blessings,

What I'm Wearing ~ 02.06.15

This week I finally felt like I had outrun the runny nose, my energy was back and a couple of weeks with not much planner are on the horizon AND a school holiday soon.  Deep breath!

This is a monumental post...the 100th post on my blog!

Monday blues?  Not really, but I've mentioned before I do love a monochromatic look and I also like pairing stripes.  It's hard to tell, but these pants are very fine navy/white stripe.

A student recently had on a "You Can't Sit With Us" t-shirt in my class. I  can't stand the Mean Girls campaign which also includes "We Wear Pink on Wednesday" items.  I wish girls would learn sooner than later to be nice to girls and build each other up not tear down. I always struggle with khaki pants, so leopard plus my $3 Target red heels gave it a little color.

Wednesday! The weather has still been chilly, so I'm still layering with scarves and jackets/sweaters every day.  This little gray jacket is one of my favorite things in my closet, and I reach for it often.  I think I got it from the Juniors section of Nordstrom, probably 5 or more years ago on a sale rack. In shopping math, I've definitely gotten my money's worth!

I feel like I've been passing myself coming and going (right side pic I didn't even realize had taken, but that's exactly what life has looked like) and the weekend is coming and will include down time! Amen.  The best thing about these black pants: they are knit, elastic waist and still look pass as professional! Cowboy boots and jacket that's secretly covering up a white uniform Hanes v-neck and it was a a pretty comfy day!

Friday this week was National #GoRedForWomen day.  I've talked about heart disease before, it's a cause I care about and want to take care of my heart.  Only seemed right to wear my RED shirt and a couple of RED accessories for GO RED day!  If you are not taking care of your  heart, I hope you'll make it a priority this year to get active at least a few minutes a day and work towards a healthy heart!

If you're looking for me, chances are I'll be on my couch a large part of the weekend and will be mostly in sweat pants. Next week will do it all over again!

Friday Favorites: Cognac!

How is it already half way through the first month of 2015 the 6th of February?! (This post has been sitting in my drafts for few weeks now, it's just been a hectic few weeks.) I had a conversation one day this week with my students about how fast time is passing....but I told them we had to quit talking about it because that was aging us! Ha!

BUT, it's Friday and this week's Friday Favorite is all things cognac!!

First up is perfect sized cross body bag! Cognac is one of my favorite neutrals and I have looked for an "everyday" cross body that isn't a clutch. One that I can put my regular wallet in and still have room.  This one is perfect! I have used it over and over in just a couple weeks months time since I found it at....drumroll...Target! If you've been here before this should come as no surprise.  Just for fun this bag also comes in black, navy and I've even seen a borderline fluorescent orange color. All for the bargain of $25 or $26, or pick it up during one of their regular BOGO 1/2 off accessory sales!

Speaking of clutch, this is one I turn to time and time again for nights out.  The basket weave design plus tassel give it a little flair.  Sometimes adding cognac piece with all black softens the outfit a bit. This belt is another staple that I wear often!  I have always loved black & cognac mixed and seems like that color combo finally made it's way to "trendy" status. This bag also has a removable chain strap that is perfect for when you need to hit the dance floor! #freestyler

I picked these Ralph Lauren cognac pumps up at Marshalls several months ago, but I've still seen them there recently. I wear them a lot, even had them on one day last week. Another wider belt is perfect for belting up dresses.  It took me a while to find the perfect belt for this style, I can't even remember where I got it, but it is pushing probably 5 years ago, at least. #oldiebutgoodie The bracelet was a gift from a sweet friend, and it's cognac leather too!

I couldn't post about cognac & not re-mention these $23 Francescas MIA Crossings boots. More on them here. I've worn these multiple times every week since I got them!

In warmer months these 3 are my favorite...2 wedges and peep toe and they go. with. everything.

Finally, an everyday cognac bag.  This was a lucky Zara (on sale when I go to the register) find, includes both short handles and a cross body strap and I have used this bag over and over again for a couple of years.  Of course Michael Kors makes great cognac bags as well as Tori Burch (a birthday gift), pictured above with the wedges.

Another pic from Summer 2012 with short hair and the bag/peep toes peeking out plus a little road souvenir real horse shoe + leather strap from a saddle girth belt.

Here's to a low key weekend with just a couple of things planned, which is also a favorite!

Blessings,

Life Lately...the very good day.

Last week I felt like Alexander on Tuesday and the terrible no good very bad day.  It wasn't anything major, but just a few little things that seemed to add up on that day.  In the grand scheme, nothing was "wrong", but we're all entitled a little pity party day from time to time.  Mine are rare, but this last couple of weeks just caught up to me....

Fighting a cold for 10ish days, students turning in sub-par work, grading 55 resumes-twice-both times including extensive edits so my students are equipped with a resume they could really use, 55 cover letters, 41 tests-including short answer response, typing tests and a few daily grades in between. Add onto that trying to stay active and hit Pure Barre classes a few times a week, volunteer commitments and feeling a little overwhelmed by my schedule and realizing the valet must have "borrowed" my sunglasses Sunday night when I valeted my car, since they are no longer in my car.  Having my stuff stolen is a sensitive topic for me, so the week just kind of snowballed.

Along the way of the week, I was working on my Discipleship Group study book and came to the fruit of the Spirit...love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. All of which were on full display.  On opposite day. I felt like I had no free time, no creative time, no "me" time, but before I camped out to grade at my kitchen table on Wednesday night, I had a snack and made myself a quick reminder...the thing I need the most every morning is Jesus...

What is most frustrating at times to me is I put myself in the bind myself.  I committed to things that take up time, time I don't mind spending, but sometimes I just want some ME time. One of my goals for 2015 was to be intentional with my time, and isn't it just something like this that will lead you to thinking you've already failed the goals/resolutions/intentions while January is ticking away feeling like a hamster on a wheel and just passing myself coming and going with my bag loaded down with Kleenex for a runny nose, cough drops and a LePen + papers for grading whenever I had a few free minutes.

A couple of times during the week I thought...
it would be nice if someone was here to take my dog on an extra walk
because I felt like I was just running in and out....
it would be nice if someone was here to make dinner....
it would be nice if ....
But, Friday came, and my sweet school bestie stopped by with a fun prize.  She is so crafty, and made this cute catch all for me. I love a monogram and this was put to use immediately to catch my daily stack at the end of the day and remind me, not only does a pretty dish from a sweet friend with my monogram catch things at the end of the day, but Jesus, the same one who's there waiting for me when I rise awaits me at the end of the day.  And, all the times in between, He meets me there, sometimes that comes in the form of a kind gesture from a friend. I hope I am that friend to someone on the days they need it most.

After a long Saturday for District competition with club I sponsor, I got to sleep in on Sunday. Not only did I sleep in, but I got to lay in the bed after I did wake up.  I finally got out of bed around 9:30, mainly because I was hungry.  It was a good morning to be lazy.

I put on my favorite green fleece jacket to make a run to the donut drive thru and while I was out realized I should go ahead and get gas.  In my leopard pj pants that were safe in the drive thru but  very "fancy" at the gas pump. Rewearing an outfit from the school week to to church was easy/lazy {& comfy} choice. Just changed out for tank vs long sleeves under my jacket because it was warmer! And a ponytail because, well, be honest... we all know clean hair doesn't go in a ponytail. Also, kind of how I feel about the Super Bowl: neutral. But, if I had to pick...Seattle.

Then there was this good word at church...reminded about being intentional, just doing something every day. I don't need to be monumental, Jesus has that covered.  I need to be incremental. Advocate, seek opportunities...every day.  The fruit of the Spirit; the character of Christ to the world. Despite the overwhelmed schedule, the grades, the pesky cold, the tired, the stolen...those things are not new, they are not unknown to Jesus. They will pass and a new day dawns, a new week begins, the calendar lets go of January for the fresh pages of February.  I just need to look at each day and do something that day. That matters.

I took a nap and laid on my couch for the entirety of the Super Bowl evening, only getting up to walk my dog and checked my mail. This note from my Dad was in my mail...snail mail cards and notes are my love language...it was just like a sweet reminder from my Heavenly Father....have a good day.

a very good day.
